Similar support can also be developed in other technologicalspaces. Inthegrammarwarespace,forinstance,alsoformalismsandtoolsareavailableforthedefinitionoflanguagesandtransformations, suchastheASF+SDF Meta-Environment[Klint,1993]and Stratego/XT[Visser,2004]. Astheprocesseswedefinedforthesupport of the different evolution tasks are technology independent, our work providesthestartingpointfordevelopingsimilarsupportbyusingand combiningothertechnologies. Thisraisesinterestingresearchquestions withrespecttowhichtechnologicalspaceisbestsuitedfordevelopmentof supportforaspecificevolutiontaskandhowtobettercombinelanguages andtransformationsdefinedindifferenttechnologicalspaces. Assumingthatsourcecoderemainsinthegrammarwareandsoftware modelsremaininthemodelwaretechnologicalspaces,thiscombinationof artefactsfromdifferenttechnologicalspacesisunavoidableformostsolutionsforsoftwareevolutiontasks. Unfortunately,therequiredbridges currentlyneedtobespecificallydeveloped,atleastpartially.Theproblem withthebridgesweusedisthattheyaredefinedonthemetamodellevel. Forsuchbridgestobegenericandreusabletheyshouldbedefinedonthe metametamodellevel. Infact,for MDAto XMLsuchabridgeisalready availableintheformofXMI.Asimilarbridgebetweengrammarwareand MDAisessentialforcombiningthesetwotechnologicalspaces.Thisbridge wouldmapEBNFtoMOFsuchthatEBNFgrammarscanbeautomatically transformedincorrespondingMOFmetamodelsandviceversa,aswellas theprogramsandmodelsconformingtothosegrammarsandmetamodels. Ourexperienceshowsthatforautomaticsupportofaparticularsoftwareevolutiontaskmultiplemodeltransformationsarerequired. Each modeltransformationinvolvesitsowntransformationrules,sourceand targetmodels,andcorrespondingmetamodels.Moreover,oftenthesupport ofevolutiontasksalsoinvolvesoperationsoutsidetheMDAspace,suchas XSLTtransformationsintheXMLspace,orsedandPerlscripts.Thismakes thatthemanagementofalltheinvolvedartefactandtransformationssteps requiresspecialattention.Althoughthisproblemwasnotthefocusofour research,inonecaseweusedabuildtool(Ant)tosolvethisproblem.However,withthisapproach,therequiredconfigurationfilesalsotendtoget verycomplex. Assuch,thisproblemcallsforadditionalsupport,which requiresadditionalresearch. Meansforthemanagementofmodelwareartefactsareessentialforsuccessfulapplicationofoursolutionsinindustry. Similartoothersoftware developmentartefactsthismodelwareisalsoexpectedtoevolve. Interestingpossibilitiestominimisetherequiredevolutionofsuchartefactsby

Suchtransformationsthathaveanothertransformationassourceortargetmodel,canbeusedfortheconformancecheckingtask,forinstance,togenerateconformancecheckingtransformationsfromthemetamodelsassociatedwiththeinvolvedmodels.Thisrequiresthatthereisametamodelforthetransformationlanguage,whichisthecaseforATL.Finally,forfurtherinvestigationoftheissuesdiscussedabove,industrialcasestudiesshouldplayanessentialroleastheydidinthisthesis.Thefocusonrealindustrialproblemsenabledustodiscoverandinvestigatedifficultiesthatareinherenttoindustrialpractice.Asanexample,the needfornormalisation,whichplaysaprominentroleinthisthesis,could nothavebeeninvestigatedwithoutsuchcasestudies.
