continuetodosointhecomingyears. Thespecificproperties<strong>of</strong>embedded<br />
s<strong>of</strong>tware,suchashardwaredependencies,makeitsdevelopmentdifferent<br />
fromnon-embeddeds<strong>of</strong>tware. Thereforeweexpectedveryspecifics<strong>of</strong>tware<br />
developmenttechnologiestobeusedinthisdomain.Theinventoryweconductedatseveralembedded-s<strong>of</strong>tware-developmentcompaniesinEuroperemarkablyshowsthatthisisnottrue.Howevertheinventoryresultsconcerningrequirementsengineering<strong>and</strong>architecturedesignatthesecompaniesdosuggestthatthereisaneedformorespecificallyaimeddevelopmenttechnologies.Thischapterpresentstheinventoryresults<strong>and</strong>identifiespossibilitiesforfutureresearchtocustomiseexisting<strong>and</strong>developnews<strong>of</strong>tware<br />
developmenttechnologiesfortheembedded-s<strong>of</strong>twaredomain.<br />
3.1 Introduction<br />
Manyproductstodaycontains<strong>of</strong>tware(e.g.,mobiletelephones,DVDplayers,cars,aeroplanes,<strong>and</strong>medicalsystems).<br />
Because<strong>of</strong>advancementsin<br />
information<strong>and</strong>communicationtechnology,inthefutureevenmoreproductswilllikelycontains<strong>of</strong>tware.Themarketforthese‘enhanced’productsisforecastedtogrowexponentiallyinthenext10years[PROGRESS,<br />
2002]. Moreover,theseembedded-systems’complexityisincreasing,<strong>and</strong><br />
theamount<strong>and</strong>variety<strong>of</strong>s<strong>of</strong>twareintheseproductsaregrowing. This<br />
