Do you fear franchising?
If you’re looking for the safest way to expand or diversify a business, it’s franchising.
Numerous people have become wealthy through franchising, and there are no financial or
educational barriers to keep anyone from using this concept successfully. Governments
around the world have made it possible for the average person to investigate franchising and
predict the outcome of a franchise investment.
But, why do so many people fear franchising when it is considered the safest way to expand or
diversify a business?
Of course, some franchise brands are better than others, but they are not all bad. Of all
the franchisees, some are more profitable than others, but they are not all struggling for
survival or even at odds with their franchisor. A little bit of investigation will show anyone
who’s interested that there’s more good than evil in franchising. Yes, success does come
with a price.
Remember, familiarity is one of the reasons franchised businesses succeed. Each one that’s
successful follows a system. The system has been crafted to meet the needs of consumers
and ultimately to produce a profit for the person who implements the system. That’s called
franchising. Most small business owners, including franchisees, have little expertise in
running a business. They may have perfected a skill or a craft, but that’s not the same as
running a business.
Will you succeed without fear? No. You’ll be afraid from time to time. But you ought not let
fear scare you forever from going into business without franchising!
To your franchising success in 2016!
How Will Budget 2016 Affect
SME and the Franchise Industry?
By Jack Wong & Bryan Lew
The recent Malaysian Budget 2016 on 23rd October 2015
with the theme “Prospering the Rakyat” is the first budget
under the 11th Malaysian Plan and was announced by our
Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak. It sees the increase
of RM3.2 million in our estimated revenue of RM225.7 million
in Budget 2016 compared to last year. As for the expenditure,
the budget allocates a total of RM267.2 billion compared with
the revised RM260.7 billion in 2015. Of this amount, RM215.2
billion is for Operating Expenditure and RM52 billion for
Development Expenditure.
For all intents and purposes, it is a budget where the economic
sector is focusing carefully hoping that there will be some
relief for them especially the SMEs and most importantly, how
to expand their business in this challenging wide arena. The
economic sector receive the highest share of RM30.1 billion
from the Development Expenditure of RM52 billion and the
Budget is said to premise on striking a balance between the
Capital Economy and People Economy.
It is well understood based on the current slow moving economy
due to the low spending of consumer in the past few months up
to now coupled with the current weakened ringgit together with
the recent implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on
this April 2015, the Budget is hoping to strengthen back the
economy and encouraging the SMEs to grow intensively. The
budget acknowledges that the SMEs indeed plays an important
role in developing business and the Government is expecting the
GDP growth rate from the SMEs to be at 41% by 2020. Therefore,
five initiatives have been introduced and will be undertaken:
6 Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
Franchise Viewpoint
First
Second
Third
Fourth
Fifth
Provide an additional RM1 billion for the Shariah-compliant SME Financing Scheme until 31
December 2017 with the Government subsidising 2% of the financing profit rate;
Allocate RM107 million for the SME
Blueprint to provide funds for entities
at various stages of business
development;
Allocate RM60 million for the Entrepreneurs Acceleration Scheme, and SME Capacity and
Capability Enhancement Scheme;
Establish a RM200 million SME Technology Transformation Fund under the SME Bank to
provide soft loans at 4%; and
RM18 million to expand the Small Retailer Transformation Programme (TUKAR) and
Automotive Workshop Modernisation (ATOM) projects.
Apart from the five initiatives, there are a few points worth to
take note from the Budget 2016. It seems that the budget
focuses a lot on improving the infrastructure and transportation
especially in the capital of Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Klang
area. Reducing traffic congestion, improving transportation
facilities, possibility of constructing a coastal highway, and
upgrading of airports can be seen as one of the key point to
ease the current heavily congested capital city and to ensure the
economy to grow rapidly by encouraging SMEs and well-known
brand chain franchise to setup more businesses in the
capital city.
To benefit further of the current ringgit currency and in efforts
to attract more tourists, 100% income tax exemption on
statutory income for tour operators will be extended from year
of assessment 2016 until 2018. These are certainly good news
to the tour operators and hopefully by 2016 the retailers will
recover from the recent declination of purchasing power of
Malaysian’s consumers due to the recent toll hikes and a few
price increased.
SMEs and the local franchise industry must try to keep their cost
checked to avoid any possible price increase unless necessary,
to keep the consumer from leaving. Selling of local Malaysian
products are encouraged to avoid any increased of cost due to
importation of goods and services as these will attract higher
GST due to the current weakened Ringgit. Proper planning of
cost management and cash flow management are extremely
important to maintain the businesses.
Retailers are seen to be the main focus here to ensure
more tourist are attracted to Malaysia as the Government is
targeting 30.5 million tourists which expected to contribute
RM103 billion to the economy. Franchisee should take this
opportunity to expand their brand to strengthen their platform
by influencing the buying power of the tourists before tackling
overseas franchise. To facilitate the tourists visiting Malaysia, the
Government will implement E-Visa by mid-2016.
Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
Franchise Viewpoint
With GST implemented, SMEs and the local franchise industry
have been advised to expand by exploring into the possibilities
of exporting their products or services into international market.
As exporting will be charged 0% in terms of GST and the current
level of Malaysian currency, it is good news that a sum of RM235
million will be allocated to MATRADE for 1Malaysia Promotion
Programme; Services Export Fund and Export Promotion Fund.
The SMEs are encourage to tackle the China market and the
Bank Negara will be providing the Ringgit-Renminbi credit swap
facility for local banks in order to diversify the use of foreign
currency in trade transactions.
In another separate matter, local SMEs have to take this
revised provision of penalty seriously in order to avoid possible
penalisation by the authorities. With the current revision of
penalty of non-filing of tax return Form C, there is an extension
from Budget 2015 which was RM200 – RM20,000 penalty
on offender to Budget 2016 which is RM200 – RM20,000 for
first year non submission and RM1,000 – RM20,000 for nonsubmission
of more than two years. Apart from that, initially there
is no penalty for disclosing wrong info in tax return Form C but
with the recent proposal we will be seeing a penalty of RM200 –
RM20,000 coming into operation of the Act.
In this challenging times for the SMEs and the local franchise
industry, Cheng & Co have been waiting to see the business
owners to grow not only in Malaysia but internationally and
with the recent implementation of GST this year, it forced the
businesses to look for opportunities beyond the bad times and
to move forward. We know in these desperate times, proper
guidance and professional advice must be provided, Cheng
& Co as one of the largest home grown Accounting Firm in
Malaysia are able to understand the needs and the uncertainties
especially GST, faced by the business owners especially SMEs
and the franchise industry on how to further strengthen and
expand their business.
Currently, SMEs are eligible to claim income tax exemption of
10% or 15% of the value of increase in exports and to further
increase exports, SMEs now are given flexibility to comply with
the value-add condition that is from 30% to 20% and from 50% to
40% for manufactured products. The Budget is giving flexibility for
years of assessment 2016 to 2018.
With the current market flowing towards an increasingly
liberalized global market, it requires Malaysian SMEs to move
beyond national boundaries. We will be seeing soon enough
where the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) will take place in the
near future. SMEs and the local franchise industry should take
this opportunity and prepared themselves to utilize the market
access opportunity as soon as possible.
Developing
a Good
Branding
Strategy
for Your
Franchise
Business
By Gary Loh of Purpleclay Consulting Pte.
There are various measures on what
constitute successful franchises.
Measures may include:
• Demand for the Franchise Brand;
• Success of Existing Franchisees; or
• Overall Brand Valuation
In this article, we shall use brand
valuation as a proxy for successful
franchises. Taking reference from
millwardbrown.com and Brand Finance,
the most successful global franchise
brands are (in terms of brand valuation)
McDonalds (USD 86.7 billion),
Starbucks (USD 25.7 billion) and
Subway (USD 21.0 billion).
So what exactly makes these three
global brands the most successful global
franchise brands?
McDonald’s
From an external point of view, many
observers and analysts attribute the
success of McDonald’s to the following
reasons:
• Great Operating Model (Consistency)
- McDonald’s has one of the most sound
and operationally solid business platforms
in the world regardless of industry.
• Collaborative Relationships with
Franchisees (Innovation) - McDonald’s
has one of the most synergistic working
relationships with their franchisees in the
franchise industry. The Breakfast Menu,
Fillet-O-Fish, Big Mac, Apple Pie, Egg
McMuffin, McFlurry have all come from
franchisee’ suggestions.
10 Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
Franchise Viewpoint
• Brand Development (Audience
Knowledge & Exposure) - McDonald’s
spends over one billion dollars per
year on brand development and
advertising. This brand development is
what has fueled the growth of not only
the franchise system, but each of the
operating units themselves.
• Financial Management -
McDonald’s owes the real estate
that the franchisee’s operate on, the
McDonald’s system became one of the
largest land owners in the world in a
very short time period.
• Vendor Relationships - Coca-Cola is
the most prominent of the vendors, but
each of the supplier’s partners play a
critical role in the successful expansion
of the franchise.
However, from an internal point of
view, McDonald’s success hinge on the
following critical factors:
• Focusing on Offering the Best Value
(Product) - McDonald’s spent several
years experimenting with high-end
items like Angus beef burgers and
Chicken Selects. By focusing on this,
McDonald’s ignored one of its biggest
strengths. CEO Don Thompson is
luring back cash-strapped customers
with low-priced offerings like the
Jalapeno McDouble and Buffalo Ranch
McChicken in USA.
• Focusing on Customer Service
(Service) - McDonald’s drive-thru
wait times have gotten worse over
the years, in-part because of an
increasingly complex menu. The CEO
acknowledged this problem and said
that the company is sending corporate
representatives in for a “service
reset,” which include adding more
workers and assigning new tasks
to existing ones. Company is also
remodelling European kitchens for
faster food assembly.
• Focusing on Simplicity - McDonald’s
menu has grown 70% since 2007.
The new menu items are a burden on
employees, and have helped contribute
to long wait times. Franchisees are
also angry about the overloaded
menu, saying that the extra ingredients
and equipment are costing them
money. Company is streamlining
their merchandising menu board
and product offerings and in addition
to making it easier for customer to
order their favourite products, aimed
at reducing complexity which in turn
should enhance accuracy and speed
of service.
• Focusing on Marketing (Outreach) -
many view McDonald’s as unhealthy
junk food. In order to improve
public perception of the company,
McDonald’s is doing a global audit of
the marketing department. In January
2015, Company will move from a
philosophy of “billions served” -- a line
featured on the chains’ marquees
-- to “billions heard.” On various social
media platforms, McDonald’s will
continue to actively listen to customer
feedback and keep the lines of
communication open.
Starbucks
From an external point of view, many
observers and analysts attribute the
success of Starbucks to the following
reasons:
• Right Market Segmentation -
Company has stayed with the
upper-scale of the coffee market,
competing on comfort rather than
convenience, which is the case with
its closest competitors - McDonald’s
and Dunkin Donuts.
• Execution - Company continues to
focus on its original product bundle
that includes good coffee, quality
service, and a nice environment to
hang around.
• Superb Leadership - Company founder
Howard Schultz, who continues to
come up with innovative products
to expand the company’s product
portfolio, leads Starbucks.
These reasons can be seen in the market
entry and engagement of Starbucks in
China. As is the case with the Japanese,
Chinese people live as extended families
in small houses. This means that there is
a strong demand for Starbucks as a “third
place”. Instead of trying to force onto the
market the same products that work in
the U.S., such as whip cream-covered
frozen coffee concoctions, Starbucks
developed flavours, such as green teaflavoured
coffee drinks, that appeal to
local tastes. Rather than pushing take-out
orders, Starbucks adapted to Chinese
local consumer wants and promoted dinein
service.
Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
11
Franchise Viewpoint
While this means that revenue per
square meter is less than in the U.S,
Starbucks offset the relative lack of
revenue in China’s outlets by positioning
the company and its products as
aspirational purchases. However, the
average coffee sold in China is far more
expensive than in the U.S. Starbuck’s
high pricing strategy of specialty drinks
allows it to have its Chinese outlets be
more profitable per store in China despite
the lower sales volume.
Through smart positioning, it did not
use any advertising and promotions
that could be perceived by the Chinese
as a threat to their tea-drinking culture.
Instead, it focused on selecting highvisibility
and high-traffic locations to
project its brand image.
as brand ambassadors to help establish
the Starbucks culture in new locations
and ensure that service at each local
store meets their global standards.
In China, Starbucks partner locally to
address the complexity of the Chinese
market, Starbucks partnered with three
regional partners as part of its expansion
plans. They understand the meaning of
long term commitment and have done
an excellent job in recruiting and training
its employees. This is a win-win strategy
because employees are at the heart of
delivering the “Starbucks Experience” to
customers. They are the best marketing
ambassadors for the company.
While this means that revenue per square
meter is less than in the U.S. (average
revenue per outlet in China is one third to
two thirds of those in the U.S.), Starbucks
offset the relative lack of revenue
in China’s outlets by positioning the
company and its products as aspirational
purchases. The average coffee sold in
China is far more expensive than in the
U.S. Carrying a Starbucks cup is seen as
a status symbol, a way to demonstrate
sophistication and the capability to afford
a personal luxury for the up-and-coming
middle class in China. Starbuck’s high
pricing strategy of specialty drinks allows
it to have its Chinese outlets be more
profitable per store in China despite the
lower sales volume. Overall in Asia, its
operating margins are 34.6% in 2011
versus 21.8% in the United States.
So What Do Successful Brands Have
in Common?
Consistency - When consumers come
back to a business for repeat sales,
they usually expect to receive the same
level of quality as they did the first time.
No one wants to deal with a company
they can’t rely on for consistency. With
so many industries being saturated
with competitors, inconsistency is often
enough of a reason for consumers to
take their business elsewhere. That’s
why it’s so important to adhere to a
certain quality standard with a product or
service e.g. McDonald’s.
Starbucks also believe in branding
themselves globally via maintaining brand
integrity. One of Starbucks’ best practices
is to send their best baristas from
established markets to new markets and
train new employees. These baristas act
12 Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
Franchise Viewpoint
Leadership - Just like any thriving
community or sports team, there’s
typically an influential leader behind
every successful brand. To coordinate
the efforts of team members and guide
a strategic vision for a brand, someone
has to step up and steer the ship. Usually,
they are also expert motivators and know
how to maximize the strengths of different
team members.
Passion - While it’s certainly possible to
build a brand in the short-term without
passion, it’s almost impossible to sustain
it in the long run. When you examine
massively successful people like Steve
Jobs, they all have a serious passion that
keeps propelling them to work hard and
continually deliver greatness. Consumers
often become just as enthusiastic about
a product or service, leading to word of
mouth advertising and referrals. Passion
also helps businesses persevere through
inevitable setbacks.
Uniqueness - Establishing a brand identity
requires something distinctive. Creating
an identity within a niche doesn’t demand
a revolutionary idea. It simply needs to
have one special thing that separates it
from the competition.
Competitiveness - Gaining an edge in
today’s business world isn’t easy. For a
brand to make a name for itself, team
members should thrive on competition
and constantly strive to improve. When
it comes to the major players in any
industry, none simply sit back and hope
that their consumers will do the work
for them. Instead, they tend to be the
movers and shakers who work tirelessly
toward building and optimizing their
brand, going above and beyond consumer
expectations. The end result tends to be
a brand that is continually on the cutting
edge of its industry.
Audience Knowledge - The best
brands have a thorough understanding
of the demographics of their target
market, what their interests are, and
how they communicate e.g. Starbucks.
Understanding the target market is critical
because it provides direction for the tone
and reach of a marketing campaign, along
with the overall identity of a brand, while
helping to create a connection between a
business and its audience.
Exposure - Another big part of being
recognized as a distinctive, successful
brand is the ability to reach consumers
through multiple channels. However, the
Internet and social media have narrowed
the gap between small companies and
large ones. By developing a presence on
networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn
and Google+, anyone is able to reach
almost any consumer.
In conclusion, today’s franchisees have
access to greater amounts of information
faster than ever before. With pervasive
social media tools and the current
trend of web and video blogging, brand
managers are met with an ever increasing
number of threats to maintaining their
brand’s image and credibility. This is
particularly challenging for franchising
companies. Franchisor wrestles with
the balancing act of protecting their
brands while supporting the creative and
entrepreneurial spirit of their franchisees.
This universal challenge exists, in large
part, because of the very nature of the
franchising model and its inherently
competing characteristics.
10 Most Important Aspects
When Buying A Franchise
Finding the right franchise can be a tough task especially for a newcomer to the industry. Several factors
have to be carefully considered before making this significant long term investment. Here are the ten
most important aspects to be looked into before becoming a franchisee:
14 Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
Franchise Viewpoint
How do you know when you have found the right
franchise for you?
1. Growth potential in the market
The concept should have a sustainable growth potential in the
market at a local, national and international level. The analysis
or market research for this should be provided by the franchisor.
However, it is equally important to conduct a separate research
about the market growth and potential future competition,
especially at the local level, by gathering information from the
web, family and friends. Ensure that the concept is suited to
the locale targeted for franchise business, even if it has been
successful in some other part of the country or state.
4. Marketing and advertising support
The marketing needs have to be understood in detail. Some of
the aspects to be considered are:
• What are the type of marketing, sales building, advertising
programmes and resources provided by the franchisor?
• Is the franchisor responsible for ensuring that the marketing
and promotional campaigns are more effective than those of
the competitors?
• Does the franchisor leverage the power of online marketing
and social media?
• Would there be a monthly deduction towards a separate
marketing fund managed by the franchisor? How is the fund
managed? What is ROI for the fund?
2. Controlled growth of the franchise network
Analyse the nature of growth sustained in previous years. An
incremental growth in the number of franchise units is a good
indicator of future profitable growth. Also, the more the number
of units, the greater the brand awareness among the customers.
Be cautious if the past records show rapid or exponential growth.
Dig deeper into the franchisor’s recruiting or selling approach
and ability to support a rapidly growing network of fledgling
businesses.
3. Ongoing franchisor support
Ensure that the franchisor provides comprehensive training,
operations and business building support to help get the
franchise established and to keep it sustainable and profitable.
The franchisor should also be actively involved in keeping
the business at the cutting edge of product development,
management approach, and compliance.
5. Satisfied and enthused franchisees
Talking to the past and current franchisees will help in
understanding the challenges involved in the franchise business
and issues to be tackled. It is important to take the responses
with a pinch of salt as not all franchisee businesses can be
expected to be equally successful. But, if the predominant
opinion is negative, then it might be better to not enter the
business at all.
Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
15
Franchise Viewpoint
6. Potential for sustainable profit
Try to obtain the average earnings information in a Financial
Information Disclosure Document from the franchisor. It is also a
good idea to talk to the existing franchisees about their financial
performance. Review the figures with an accountant and evaluate
the potential performance that can be achieved in the locality
chosen for business.
8. The franchisor’s financial standing
While reviewing the franchisor’s historical financial performance
figures, ensure that the past and current accounting practices
are sound and financially
robust so as to support the
growth of their business and
ultimately the growth of the
franchisees under them.
9. Franchisor behaviour -
Integrity, transparency
& honesty
The franchisor’s behaviour
while responding to questions about profitability, sustainability
and other important matters is a good indication of the support
that can be expected at a later stage while running the business.
Make sure the requests for information are responded to in a
clear and speedy manner, with valid responses. Any grey areas,
omissions, suspicious activity or lack of transparency is a
red flag.
7. A reputable management team
Be familiar with the management team of the franchisor and
try to establish a rapport with them, as this working relationship
will prove to be critical after starting the franchise. Look at the
company’s past, its founders or master franchisees and their
business acumen. Find out how long the company has been
franchising.
10. A substantial system
A strong and robust system will provide the franchisees with
all of the operations systems, software, training programmes,
equipment (in some cases) and monitoring tools to establish a
sound business. Ensure all of this is in place. Make sure that a
strong and fair franchise agreement is put together, so that it
not only protects the brand and franchisor, but also providesthe
business support, compliance protection, brand and product
development that will help grow a sustainable business. It
is important to review the agreement with a solicitor with
franchise experience.
Making Eye
Level the
Choice In
Self-Directed
Learning
& Blended
Learning
In essence, Eye Level is
based on an educational
principle where students
learn at their own pace.
And when a teacher
understands the learning
needs of a student,
the teaching are most
effective. As a leading
provider in supplemental
education for Math,
English, Eye Level learning
centers strive to teach and
tutor children ages 3-16 in
basic learning skills.
One Eye Level Franchisee who has
made a name under the Eye Level
banner within just one year of
operation is Ms Satine Lim of Eye
Level Subang Bestari branch.
18 Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
Interview
Why Eye Level Franchise?
When I was younger, I wanted to become my own boss or a business
owner. I wished to be involved in something that can bring goodwill
to our society. With that aim, I ventured into financial consulting for
the past 10 years to educate people about asset protection, family
protection and the importance of saving.
As I grew older, got married and have my own children, I became
interested on children related business. My cousins were with
Eye Level since 2006. Through them, I could see improvement in
their math skills. Not only that, they also possess a very positive
attitude in problem solving. When I was exploring children related
business, Eye Level was the first in my mind. I love children and I
believe every child deserves a bright future.
Education is the main key for children to achieve their goals and to
be able to contribute back to the world. With a proven education
system and market experience in Eye Level, I believe I could obtain
guidance to run my own business although I did not have any
experience in running a children enrichment center.
What I like most about being an Eye Level franchisee is the simple,
easy and effective business system. I have no doubt on the
effectiveness of Eye Level programs. After I attended the Eye Level
Business Orientation, I was amazed with the successful franchisees
in Malaysia. They have been the proven role models to me.
How Has Eye Level Supported In Your
Franchise Route?
In the first few months, I think the major challenges were how to
promote my center to my area and how to spread the word that a
good learning system is available in my area. I hung banners and
distributed flyers. As a result, I received positive response from the
parents of my area.
The possibility of having 100, 200 or even 300 students is possible.
Eye Level provides professional advice from setting up the center
to center marketing and operations. Trainings are ongoing and
they have been useful in equipping new franchisee as a successful
entrepreneur as well as a center instructor. All I need to do is just
attend the trainings and learn as much as I can to implement the
ideas and advice is given to run my center fruitfully.
I am touched with the support that the Eye Level HQ has shown
to me. They engage themselves in every center related issue. We
have our own assigned Area Manager, routine meetings and the
Eye Level family web portal to stay in touch with one another.
How You Became A Successful Eye Level
Franchisee?
I am the key to making my center successful and to ensure more
children are reaping the benefits of Eye Level programs. With the
company’s direction towards the Self-Directed Learning concept
and Blended Learning system, I strongly believe that my center will
be the first choice for parents in my area. What sets me apart from
other franchisees is that my center’s constant monitoring on our
students’ progress and ongoing consultation with parents.
An essential tip to be a successful Eye Level franchisee is one has
to be fully committed in monitoring the existing and new students.
Of course, quality instructors make a center flourish too. Lastly,
always be positive and remember that you are “The Key” to a
successful mindset.
How to Become An Eye Level Franchisee?
Anyone can be a franchise business owner. I always put myself in a
child’s shoes when I am in class with my students. Think like them,
feel like them. Be fun, friendly and energetic to the students. When
it comes to parents, I will be the key person to communicate with
them on their children’s behaviour in class and learning progress.
To those who are interested to take up the Eye Level franchise
business, do not say “Yes” or “No” until you have attended the
Eye Level Business Orientation conducted by Daekyo Malaysia. Be
open-minded and obtain a full understanding on the business.
For over 30 years in 20 countries, Eye Level has nurtured millions of
young minds to excel academically in Math and English. Internationally
recognized, we are one of the world’s top educators in Self-Directed
Learning, Critical Thinking Math and Blended Learning. Our learning
methodology has produced over 2.5 million students worldwide to
Emergence of New Industries
in Singapore’s Franchising
and Licensing Ecosystem
Interview
Can you tell us reasons for this growth in
unconventional sectors in the franchising
and licensing industry
The ease of information and many alternative forms of
communication are playing an important role in the growth of
all business sectors around the world, and the franchising and
licensing industry is no exception.
Nowadays, new and existing business owners have already made
it a norm to constantly embark on new innovations. They are
more open to change management and the realisation of having
better documentation of standard operating procedures in their
current business. They have started to realise that franchising
and licensing could be another option for them to expand their
businesses and are more willing to explore and invest in this
business model. While the Education and F&B sectors remain
strong, other unconventional sectors are also gaining momentum
in luring more potential franchisees and investors into their
respective sectors.
this line of work. There will be an increase in the number of new
and trendy brands coming into market, while long-time players
have to reinvent or innovate to keep up with market expectations.
Share with us some insight into the
franchising and licensing landscape in
Singapore, and where it is headed.
We all know for a fact that the F&B sector in the franchising
landscape in Singapore has always been strong. The Education
sector continues to increase in momentum, especially as the
demand for this sector has gained more interest in recent years.
The Healthcare, Lifestyle and Property industries are some other
sectors that are also moving up the ladder as well. In general,
potential franchisees and investors are more open to considering
franchises and licenses from various sectors. They are also more
knowledgeable about utilising this type of business model for
expansion, both locally and internationally.
How is this stimulating the franchising
and licensing landscape?
We will see more companies from different industries considering
franchising and licensing as another additional business model.
Current franchisors or franchisees will also go into other similar, or
even unconventional sectors – mainly to diversify their business.
Furthermore, we will see more people being trained and educating
themselves on franchising and licensing to improve or embark in
The Singapore government has always been supportive of
different brands and companies coming into the country to set up
their businesses. Coupled with the presence of the Franchising
and Licensing Association (Singapore) which supports members
in their franchising and licensing journey, Singapore is the perfect
place for overseas concepts to begin their franchising and
licensing expansion plans in the region by having Singapore as
their Asia headquarters.
Interview
Dancing Crab –
Grooving to the Top!
Dancing Crab, a Louisiana-style eatery, was crowned the overall winner in the
‘Promising Franchisor of the Year’ category in the recent FLA awards 2015.
Within one short year, Dancing Crab has expanded to five locations, including
Tokyo, Osaka, Sumatra, with an outlet in Australia scheduled to open in 2016.
Said Norman Hartono, General Manager of Dancing Crab, “Winning the overall
‘Promising Franchisor of the Year’ award was unexpected and it is a huge
encouragement to know that we are heading in the right direction. When I
began in this line, I did not know anything about franchising and licensing at all,
but have FLA to thank for providing me with invaluable lessons to kick-start this
journey. My advice to anyone looking to develop his or her brand into a franchise
is to not give up. Singapore is a tough market but continue persevering and you
can go anywhere in the world.”
Franchise Asia had more questions for Norman Hartono in this interview.
22 Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 29
Interview
Can you name some of the factors that
contributed to Dancing Crab’s exciting
growth?
Some factors that have contributed to the growth of Dancing
Crab’s brand could be attributed to our unique franchise model
as well as the support of a central kitchen.
Unlike other franchise models that require ingredients and core
items to be produced and purchased from the main franchisor,
we tailor each outlet to suit the local food climate and use local
ingredients to maintain the freshness and sustainability of both
the food and business of our franchisees. Locally in Singapore,
we have the support of a central kitchen that produces our core
selling items to maintain food consistency and to help ease our
manpower needs.
How does Dancing Crab stand out from
the competitors?
Although the eating style of the Cajun seafood concept is already
unique on its own, we still treat ourselves as a serious restaurant
where food quality and service is paramount over everything
else. That is why every outlet sells only the freshest seafood
as well as authentic Cajun/Creole favorites such as gumbo,
jambalaya and po’ boys, amongst others, that stand up to those
found in New Orleans.
What are some of the setbacks and
challenges faced by Dancing Crab when
starting out in franchising? And how did
you overcome them?
One challenge we faced during the starting phases of franchising
Dancing Crab was to create scalability for the brand and the
product of Dancing Crab. We tried to mass produce our core
products, but the quality was not up to our standards. As a result,
we decided to tailor each franchise by using the local ingredients
and produce available from our franchisees to create the exact
same taste found in any Dancing Crab outlet in the world.
If you had to start over, would you do
anything differently?
No, I would not.
What is in the pipeline for Dancing Crab?
Next in the pipeline would be for us to expand the brand further
into more countries, as well as to help develop our current
overseas partners into master franchisees where they are able to
independently take on and expand within their respective regions.
What would your advice be for someone
starting off in the franchise business?
Do not ever compromise on the core concept of your business,
keep evolving your brand and keep it simple to increase the
scalability of your franchise.
The handmade nature of the candy is central to the brand
proposition. Customers are engaged by the theatrical
experience of seeing the candy made in-store. “Every one of
our customers can come in-store and explore their senses
with our delicious candy,” says the company. “They can watch
the magic as we create names, designs and logos within our
small bite size pieces of rock candy or create candy wonders of
flowers and toffee.”
While the store provides a suitable for all age groups retail
experience and bedrock for the business, growth is explored
through wholesale to premium high-end retailers, high profit
margin catering for corporate events, e-commerce through online
stores and in-store masterclass experiences enabling customers
to create their own confectioneries.
The company is looking to explore new countries in franchise
partnership with truly creative business people with retail,
hospitality or restaurant operation experience and strong
interpersonal skills who can develop a business beyond retail to
exploit the additional revenues available to the concept.
“We are not just a retailer and manufacturer,” adds the company.
“We offer a unique and bespoke service that targets ABC1
demographics with a target age group of 5 years old to 85 years
old. Our core customers are 25-45 year old females with high
disposal income who are attracted to a luxury consumer product
and service that is a ‘guilt free’ purchase.”
Thailand’s
Top Franchise
Brands Seek
Malaysian
Franchisees
By Kavin Kittiboonya, Managing Director
Diversified Communications (Thailand) Co., Ltd
The franchise business in ASEAN countries (ASEAN Economic
Community) is currently expanding expeditiously, with several
brands increasing branches in their home countries and others
spreading their wings to foreign countries including those in
ASEAN and the Middle East.
The franchise brands from Malaysia that have established
branches in Thailand and have been successful in their
operations are many including Secret Recipe with over 30
branches, Global Art & Creative (an educational brand) with
more than 60 branches, the bakery brand Bapple Donut &
Coffee, the educational brand, to name just a few.
At the same time, quite a number of franchise brands from
Thailand have set up shops in Malaysia, such as BBQ Plaza
(food), Black Canyon (coffee and food), Coca Suki (food), Mango
Tree (food), Smart Brain (education), Doichang (coffee), etc.
Furthermore, many other franchise brands have shown
tremendous interest in opening the market and finding
investors in Malaysia, including Smart Brain (education), Chao
Doi (coffee and bubble tea), GFA (coffee and bakery), The
Waffle (waffle), N&B (crepe), Hokkaido (dairy products), etc., all
of which have been successful domestically and strong enough
at present to extend their brands to foreign countries.
It is noteworthy that all the franchise brands mentioned
above are exhibitors in the Thailand Franchise & Business
Is franchising for you?
What you should consider when investing
in a franchise business
By Troy Franklin, COO - World Franchise Associates (South East Asia)
Before you consider investing in a franchise business you
should understand the concept of franchising and you should
understand the brand that you are considering investing in and
the people behind it.
In simple terms franchising is just a method of doing business, a
method of marketing products and services which is now being
used across an ever growing variety of industries and businesses.
Although most people credit the invention of franchising to
American commerce the word “franchise” is derived from the
French word “franchir”, which means “to be free – exempt from
servitude” which is appropriate because franchising offers you
the freedom to own and operate your own business. In any
event franchising in this millennium has no nationality, religion,
race, colour or creed and the application of the franchise
business model has been adopted worldwide.
In a franchise business relationship the brand owner is the
franchisor and the party that owns the right to the tradename,
trademarks and intellectual property of the business and you
as the franchisee are the party that is granted the right to use
the trademarks and intellectual property of business for a
predetermined period of time and in a predetermined location
or geographical area.
In its ideal state, a franchise is the “marriage” of an
entrepreneurial company with a proven business system and
a hard-working, local independent business owner willing to
follow that proven system. The “marriage” is a contractual
relationship spelled out in a written franchise agreement which
details the rights and obligations of both parties.
There are various types of franchise agreements depending
on the brand, the nature of the franchise arrangement and the
development and geographical scope of the arrangement. The
most common types of franchise agreements are the single
unit/business franchise agreement, a multi- unit/business
franchise agreement typically called an area developer
agreement and a multi- unit/business franchise agreement
that allows for 2 tiers of franchising typically called a master
franchise agreement.
International Focus
When looking at the most successful franchise brands you can
see that most share common traits and characteristic and most
of them have identified, invested in and maintain the following:
• Excellent franchisees
• An experienced, energetic & focused management team
• Effective manuals and “operating” tools
• Effective training programs
• Strong leadership
• Outstanding franchisor/franchisee relationships
• A sound business and financial plan
• A customer (guest) focused attitude
When you consider investing in a franchise business keep in
mind that franchising is a growth strategy and not a survival
strategy. If you determine that the brand you are talking
to needs to franchise just to stay afloat you should look
elsewhere for franchise opportunities as the brand needs to
re-examine its competitiveness and the fundamentals of its
business. Some key reasons for brands to use a franchise
developmentmodel include:
• Accelerating their expansion and market penetration
• Minimizing their contingent liabilities
• Minimizing their management procurement challenges
• Reducing the daily challenges of direct management
• Generating income based on store openings and recurring
income from gross sales
• Reaching target consumers more effectively
• Improving efficiencies and economies of scale
• Generating supplemental income from products
and services
• Capitalizing on advertising pooling potential
You should also carefully consider these 10 essential issues
when you evaluate a franchise business:
• The brands vision, mission and values and its reputation
and public image
• The long term commitment of the brands shareholders
• The capability and experienced of the brands
management team
• The uniqueness of the brands products and services and if it
has broad appeal
• The overall competitiveness of the brand
• The financial track record of the brand
• The anticipated break-even point & return on
your investment
• The ease of transferring and replicating the concept
• The ability to maintain and deliver consistent standards to
your customers
• The completeness and adequacy of the “SYSTEM” (Manuals,
Processes & Tools)
• The quality and adequacy of the training program
Beyond these 10 essential considerations detailed above you
should also ensure that you understand the business and
how it operates in terms of the outlet prototypes, the brands
key competition, the target market and consumer profiles,
the brands marketing strategies, your investment cost and
anticipated return and the fees you will be required to pay to
the brand owner.
Before you make a final decision about the brand you should
also make sure that the brand is going to provide you with
an operations manual, training & ongoing guidance support,
details of site selection criteria, standard pans & specifications,
initial & ongoing advertising & promotional support, a list of
and access to the required products, strong identity & brand
usage guidelines, and access to continued improvements and
enhancements in the system.
While understanding the brand you are considering investing in
is obviously very important it is even more important to know
and understand yourself and you should ask and answer the
following questions:
Franchise Asia • 2016 Vol 31
31
International Focus
• Are you serious about running your own business
• Are you willing to work hard 24-7-365
• Are you willing to do the dirty work
• Are you going to enjoy owning and operating the
franchise business
• Are you willing to follow the franchise System
• Are you successful in dealing with people
• Can you afford the investment
• Do you understand your contractual obligations
• Do you have spouse and family support
• Do you have a positive outlook and a strong desire
to succeed
• Do you want to make money and achieve
financial independence
If you do ultimately invest in a franchise you will become part
of a family and together with the franchisor you will need to
constantly work on the following:
• Enhancing the real and perceived value of the brand in the
minds of current customers and the community.
• Getting and keeping more and more customers by
marketing the brand and consistently following the proven
operating system.
• Becoming more efficient, effective and profitable
• Developing people who are committed to serving customers
Franchising is a proven business model and the pros of
investing in a great franchise brand far outweigh the cons.
Additionally investing in a franchise business generally presents
much less of a risk than trying to create your own business
from scratch.
Hopefully the advice in this article will help you when you
are evaluating franchise opportunities and considering an
investment in a franchise business and I will leave you with
a bit of ancient wisdom which is somewhat more time tested
than the advice that I have given you herein:
“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while
defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win”
