Why would we waste the money, or why would they? A robust solution will mean customer satisfaction, which in turn means customer loyalty. David Davies - DVS We should always carry out risk assessments that engage with the end user, they are critical to providing the correct system type along with any packages that need to support the system. In order to achieve this, it is vital that you engage directly with the user to ask them their requirements, how their business works, operating environments, lighting and site conditions to fully understand what solution they require. Once you have gathered this information, it is often useful to summarise and repeat back your understanding of what they have set out to remove any misunderstandings and both parties have the same expectations of the system requirements. My approach for both new contracts and taking over existing sites would be the same, being an intruder system, CCTV, access control or a combination of all providing a complete solution. The solution needs to work for the user. The customer may benefit from additional services that may include remote monitored intruder and CCTV so that any alarm activation can be then backed up with live / event CCTV footage which enables the ARC to further this with police action. It may be that using audio deterrent on the site would be enough to prevent further action with a local key holding company also attending to ensure the premises is still secure and safe. Graeme Dow - Safeguard Security Consultants There are several lessons to be learnt from the Hatton Garden burglary during Easter 2015 - it does not seem like two years ago. The gang of ten reportedly spent around three years planning the heist. To be successful they needed to check the front door access, rear gate access, lobby access, lift shaft access, lift motor operation, the details of the intruder alarm system including the siting of all relevant detectors, the siting of the control panel, how to neutralise self-activating sounders, the siting of the CCTV cameras and recorder, the type of remote signalling, the thickness and type of construction of the vault wall, the type of drill (Hilti DD350)needed to breach this wall, and how to operate it – it has to be bolted to the wall and water lubricated. They also needed to know where to steal one as buying one themselves might well give them away at some point. Against that an intruder alarm company would have done its own risk survey. How long would that take? Not nearly long enough based on the system I examined. There were serious flaws and the intruders were clearly aware of them and exploited them. As this was a takeover did the new maintainer rely on the system being fit for purpose without doing his own risk assessment? Was this acceptable bearing in mind the time the system had been installed? And equally importantly did either company think hard about the analysis of experienced intruders at BS EN 50131 Grade 3 level. Should this have been a Grade 4 even – it was after all safe deposit vault with high value/low volume/weight jewellery and gold. And the signalling? Was anything less than Grade 4 going to be acceptable? From all I saw in my two day post loss investigation inside the vault was that the ingenuity of the intruders was vastly under-estimated. Intruders were way ahead of the game. As a forensic expert witness burglary investigator for over 20 years I have rarely seen any that did not show signs of insider knowledge. Unless installers realise how thorough and resourceful intruders are – and install systems to take that into account – intruders will take advantage. On a happier note, the gang (minus “Basil”) were caught fairly quickly, but that was due solely to excellent police detective work. Also, I only get to investigate the successful intrusions, so in no way is this intended as a criticism of alarm installers generally.
