Sprockets: Not so Unique
By David Robertson, Region President
he longer I am in this club, the more I realize
that my life-long obsession with Porsche,
T
and more specifically the Porsche 911, is
not as unique as I had previously thought.
Each individual Porsche model stands on its own and
has a following within the club, but we all have our favorites
for different reasons. My love affair with the 911
began when I was very young and it has just stuck into,
well, let’s just say advanced adulthood. I will cover that
story in another episode, but whenever I see a Porsche
911 in the wild, including the one I am lucky enough to
own, I always get a bit of a rush.
I used to think that my constant checking of the
typical new and used car sites for Porsches that I wasn’t
remotely in the market for could be a unique quirk,
but as it turns out, not so much. I have also been able to
get within $5000.00 of doubling the base price of a 911
S by adding options on the Porsche car configurator. I
know that with enough time and effort I will be able to
find those unique options that I have missed in there
somewhere. Is this a good use of my time? Of course
not, but the task is begging to be completed. This is not
something I would admit to in the mixed company of
non-Maverick members, although through many conversations
I realize that many of you have these same
tendencies.
If you are like me -- and I
Our tagline
is “Driving
Friendships”
and there is
no better way
to meet new
people or
catch up with
old friends than
at one of our
social events.
know most of you are -- there
are plenty of ways to meet up
with fellow Maverick members
and get your dose of the experience.
Our tagline is “Driving
Friendships,” and there is no
better way to meet new people
or catch up with old friends
than at one of our social events.
From a lunch or Happy Hour/
Dinner gathering, to just
checking out some great cars
on a Saturday morning at Mavs
& Mochas, all you need to do is
just show up. If you want to get out and take a drive you
can go low key with a Tour or a Rally. If more adrenaline
is required, you have your choice of several track
events. Did I also mention we are having two Driver
Education (DE) events at COTA in Austin this year for
all experience levels? If you have never driven your car
on a track, this world-famous venue in Austin could be
your first experience!
I look forward to seeing everyone at one of our
events this month!
MAV OF THE MONTH: Jim Hirsch
Jim Hirsch joined PCA in 2014 when he and his wife
Sharon purchased a new Boxster S. He had been an
active member of the Ford SVT club for years, and in
fact was their newsletter editor when he saw the light
and bought his first Porsche. His first contribution
to Slipstream came in the
form of a gift idea article
in the July 2014 issue. Not
long afterward, he heard
that Maverick Region was
looking for someone to
take over editorial duties
for Slipstream, so he generously
offered his services.
After a brief climb up the
learning curve, he took
over as Managing Editor
in May 2015, and has
been making significant
improvements to our
newsletter ever since.
Not only that, Jim has
In the Porsche pits at
Road America
continued to be an advocate of promoting our events
via social media, and was instrumental in designing
and producing a Maverick Region calendar. As if he
didn’t have enough to do, he is now involved with our
popular new Mavs & Mochas program. Thank you, Jim,
for your contribution to Maverick Region!
