The table indicates that there has not always been a correlation between national rainfall and the national
Agricultural Production index over the past 10 years.
However, over 1999 - 2001, deficient or scanty rainfall annually in 32 - 34% of Districts, and lower than Normal rainfall
overall, alongside lower agricultural prices, depressed the agricultural economy.

The extent to which agricultural land in each State is irrigated varies considerably. It ranges from 14% in Kerala in the south
to 92% in Punjab in the north.
