Source: Agriculture Statistics at a Glance, Ministry of Agriculture. Definitions are related to the “Long Period Average Rainfall”: Excess (+ 20% or
more), Normal (between + 19% and - 19%), Deficient (between - 20% and - 59%) and Scanty (between - 60% and - 99%).
The table indicates that there has not always been a correlation between national rainfall and the national
Agricultural Production index over the past 10 years.
However, over 1999 - 2001, deficient or scanty rainfall annually in 32 - 34% of Districts, and lower than Normal rainfall
overall, alongside lower agricultural prices, depressed the agricultural economy.
