eauty playbook Black, smudgy eyes This devil-may-care makeup look is undeniably sexy and surprisingly easy to pull off. “Usually makeup artists insist that you painstakingly draw your eyeliner close to the lash line; now you can freehand it, then smudge it into your top and lower lash lines with a finger,” celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal says. Eyeliner pencils and gels have just the right amount of sheen for this, but avoid anything with shimmer or glitter, says Lori Taylor Davis, Smashbox global pro lead artist. “Save that for the holidays.” Heighten the impact with: Peachy cheeks and lips The rest of your face should be very feminine, says Roncal, who recommends a pop of peach on the apples of your cheeks and a glossy lip. Try Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Peach Glow ($26, ulta.com) and Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector In Orange Shimmer ($25, clarins.com). Previous page Dark, matte lips The season’s new purple, oxblood, and nearly black lipsticks bring on a sexy, tough-chick chic. But don’t fear the dark side—mastering a bold lip that stays captivatingly precise is easier than you think. “My secret to a flawless application is to put on the lipstick first, then use a same-shade or nude liner to clean up the lip line,” Roncal says. If you want a more intense look, stick with a flat, matte finish, or you can tone it down and make it more natural with a semimatte, satin, or sheer version of a vampy shade. Heighten the impact with: Luminous skin “First, invest in a good concealer,” says Taylor Davis, “because the rest of your face should basically be bare.” Go with a long-lasting stick formula like Amazing Cosmetics Perfection Stick ($23, amazingcosmetics.com), and dab it under your eyes and on any blemishes. Then, on top of the concealer, apply an allover foundation that has a reflective, radiant quality to balance the matteness of the lips. Try Mally Face Defender BB Cream Foundation ($45, mallybeauty.com) to get just the right wattage. Done. From left: L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Gray ($9, drugstores).
