DAVID CLARK ENCAUSTIC PRINTMAKER<br />

Work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his studio/gallery <strong>in</strong> the Backstreet<br />

Art District <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gs, you<br />

will f<strong>in</strong>d David Clark. David is a multi-talented<br />

artist who began his career as an<br />

ac<strong>to</strong>r. Act<strong>in</strong>g with the direc<strong>to</strong>r Peter Sellars<br />

<strong>in</strong> Nixon Ch<strong>in</strong>a at the Brooklyn Academy<br />

and <strong>in</strong> Salome at La Scala <strong>in</strong> Milan with<br />

the avant-garde direc<strong>to</strong>r Robert Wilson.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g his work <strong>in</strong> Perform<strong>in</strong>g, he went<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d the scenes and worked with Sex &<br />

The City with set build<strong>in</strong>g, costumes, etc.<br />

Through all of his perform<strong>in</strong>g career, he<br />

was also pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g. After Sex & The City<br />

completed it’s run <strong>in</strong> <strong>20</strong>04 he returned <strong>to</strong><br />

the visual arts and became a renown crea<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong> encaustic.<br />

Encaustic is a centuries old pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g medium<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g wax, res<strong>in</strong>, and pigment. Mix<strong>in</strong>g<br />

color pigment <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the wax creates a glossy<br />

brilliant effect enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the color pigment<br />

that characterizes the pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> which<br />

it is used. David was first <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>to</strong><br />

encaustic through the work of Jasper Johns<br />

and L<strong>in</strong>da Benglis <strong>in</strong> the 1970’s. David,<br />

however, uses encaustic as a pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

medium. He says when he is pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, he<br />

lays out everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> advance because the<br />

materials are fluid and change from moment<br />

<strong>to</strong> moment. He says that “ what you<br />

do with your hands serves the ideas that are<br />

<strong>in</strong> your head.”<br />

He said the arrow can symbolize the human<br />

body, an expression of movement, time or a<br />

state of be<strong>in</strong>g, an illustration of journey or<br />

state of humank<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

You may see David’s work at his studio/<br />

gallery at certa<strong>in</strong> times. His studio is a<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g studio as well as a gallery of some<br />

of his work. However, when he is work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

he is not always open for visi<strong>to</strong>rs view<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Art Walk at the Backstreet Art District off<br />

highway 111 beh<strong>in</strong>d the Mercedes-Benz<br />

Dealership. David also teaches encaustic<br />

techniques at various venues throughout<br />

the year. His work is displayed <strong>in</strong> numerous<br />

galleries throughout the United States.<br />

We are very fortunate <strong>to</strong> have him among<br />

us <strong>in</strong> <strong>Palm</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gs as a multi-talented creative<br />

artist.<br />

Many of David’s pr<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong>clude arrows.<br />

When I started <strong>to</strong> discuss his work with<br />

him <strong>in</strong> his studio, I asked if he was <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>in</strong> archeology or paleon<strong>to</strong>logy because the<br />

use of arrows <strong>in</strong> his pr<strong>in</strong>ts rem<strong>in</strong>ded of ancient<br />

hunters and <strong>to</strong>ols. He replied he was<br />

not <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> any of those sciences but<br />
