DAVID CLARK ENCAUSTIC PRINTMAKER
EXTRORDINARE
Working in his studio/gallery in the Backstreet
Art District in Palm Springs, you
will find David Clark. David is a multi-talented
artist who began his career as an
actor. Acting with the director Peter Sellars
in Nixon China at the Brooklyn Academy
and in Salome at La Scala in Milan with
the avant-garde director Robert Wilson.
Following his work in Performing, he went
behind the scenes and worked with Sex &
The City with set building, costumes, etc.
Through all of his performing career, he
was also painting. After Sex & The City
completed it’s run in 2004 he returned to
the visual arts and became a renown creator
in encaustic.
Encaustic is a centuries old painting medium
using wax, resin, and pigment. Mixing
color pigment into the wax creates a glossy
brilliant effect enhancing the color pigment
that characterizes the paintings in which
it is used. David was first introduced to
encaustic through the work of Jasper Johns
and Linda Benglis in the 1970’s. David,
however, uses encaustic as a printing
medium. He says when he is printing, he
lays out everything in advance because the
materials are fluid and change from moment
to moment. He says that “ what you
do with your hands serves the ideas that are
in your head.”

He said the arrow can symbolize the human
body, an expression of movement, time or a
state of being, an illustration of journey or
state of humankind.
You may see David’s work at his studio/
gallery at certain times. His studio is a
working studio as well as a gallery of some
of his work. However, when he is working
he is not always open for visitors viewing.
We found him during the First Wednesday
Art Walk at the Backstreet Art District off
highway 111 behind the Mercedes-Benz
Dealership. David also teaches encaustic
techniques at various venues throughout
the year. His work is displayed in numerous
galleries throughout the United States.
We are very fortunate to have him among
us in Palm Springs as a multi-talented creative
artist.

Many of David’s prints include arrows.
When I started to discuss his work with
him in his studio, I asked if he was involved
in archeology or paleontology because the
use of arrows in his prints reminded of ancient
hunters and tools. He replied he was
not involved in any of those sciences but
