Letters of <strong>the</strong> Mouth’s Emptiness<br />

One will have noticed that <strong>the</strong> only letter that has yet to be mentioned<br />

is ( ) Alif. This is because it is <strong>the</strong> only letter which is a vowel. The rest<br />

of <strong>the</strong> letters are consonants. The only o<strong>the</strong>r letters which in some<br />

cases become vowels are ( ) Y\ and ( ) W\w. The condition for all<br />

three is that <strong>the</strong>y are S\kin (<strong>the</strong> Alif will not have a Suk[n, but will be<br />

without a *arakah) and <strong>the</strong>y follow a letter with <strong>the</strong>ir corresponding<br />

17 a When Alif has a letter with a Fat#ah coming before it, (for<br />

example ) it becomes a long vowel. Its sound is an “a” sound (as in<br />
