MUST WATCH GO HARDY GO HOME or English actor and Hollywood superstar Tom Hardy teams up with his writer father for their dark and gritty new series, Taboo

PHOTOS: BBC; GETTY IMAGES; JASON IERACE T om Hardy doesn’t mince his words when it comes to his latest TV venture, declaring of the dark Taboo: “People will either like it or hate it, but it won’t be middle of the road.” The brainchild of the Oscar-nominated actor and his writer father, Edward ‘Chips’ Hardy, the chilling series was almost a decade in the making and reunites Tom with Peaky Blinders and Locke creator Steven Knight for the third time. Set in 1814, Tom stars as James Keziah Delaney, a British adventurer who returns home from Africa under mysterious circumstances shortly after his father’s death. It’s been 12 years since Delaney disappeared, presumed dead himself. He has in his possession 14 stolen diamonds and buys a ship as he sets out to reclaim his inheritance – a small part of the west coast of North America that shipping empire the East India Company will do anything to get their mitts on. Tom’s character – which the father-and-son team initially called ‘Osbourne’ – was partially inspired by the dastardly criminal Bill Sikes, whom Tom portrayed in the 2007 film Oliver Twist. “I came home from work one day with a burning desire to play something,” the actor recalls of Taboo’s inception. “Because my father was a writer, I said, ‘What do you think of this? I could play this, couldn’t I?’” He continues, “To be bluntly honest, I wanted to play Bill Sikes, Sherlock Holmes, Hannibal Lecter, Heathcliff, Marlow [from Heart of Darkness]… just every classical character in one.” While the pair’s concept provided that initial creative stepping stone, the star acknowledges that it took a village to turn it into the visual feast it has become today. “It started off as a conversation between me and my father… but is now something unrecognisable from that conversation and it belongs to an entire team of people,” he says, adding, “It’s the period drama that I desire to watch.” But before you go thinking this is the next Downton Abbey, think again! As Knight explains, Taboo hasn’t been given the typical 19th century English romance novel treatment. “The world you’re seeing in Taboo would normally be presented as a bit Jane Austen. We’re making it more realistic, and messier,” he says. Viewers will be drawn into the dark world of the drama from the get-go, and not just because of these words: ‘Tom Hardy in a loincloth’. Though, who are we kidding, that’s a big part of the appeal! Tom Hardy (right) had a “burning desire” to play this dark character The British actor is at his absolute best as the brooding and unhinged Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and back again, and has nothing left to lose. But as his portrayer previews, looks can certainly be deceiving. “He seems insane, crazy, evil, wrong… then we find out he’s actually probably the sanest, most honest man in the room, and everybody else – the bastions and the pillars of society – are wearing masks,” he explains. “He’s a trailblazer,” adds Knight. “I wanted to make Delaney a precursor of all the great Victorian industrialists that followed him. James Delaney is a deeply flawed man and Tom is just so good at making that believable.” Over eight episodes, viewers will be enthralled as they follow our hero’s dangerous journey, with the action shifting constantly to keep everyone on the edge of their seats. “It changes sort of every three episodes,” Tom explains. “As we start to develop through the story there are different tonalities through the style of shooting and the style of acting. “Once we meet the characters, it’s not what it seems. I want to urge people to continue through that. It’s designed to slow burn. By episode eight, it’s not what you think you’re watching at all.” As for its longevity, Knight reveals the series was written with subsequent seasons in mind. And after getting such a fantastic reception when it premiered overseas, it’s already been confirmed for a second eight-episode season. “People have responded strongly, they don’t just like it – they absolutely love it!” Knight says.
