demic year. Across
the country and
across all levels of
college golf, a total
of 952 women golfers
were recognized
by the coaches association.
Goldenstein is an
honoree on the list
for the third time.
Goldenstein
Goldenstein will be one of two seniors on
the 2017-18 roster.
In high school at Parkway West, Goldenstein
was an all-state Class 2 selection
in 2012 and 2013. She qualified for the
state tournament in all four seasons as
a golfer. She posted top 35 finishes in
all four state tournament appearances,
including a third-place finish as a junior
in 2012 and a sixth-place finish as a senior
in 2013.
She was named the Accelerated Golf
Tour Player of the Year in 2013 after posting
three first-place finishes on the tour.
As a result, she qualified for, and played
in, the 2013 Junior PGA National Championship
in Washington, D.C.
At Parkway West, Goldenstein served
as the No. 1 golfer on the varsity team for
all four seasons. She also was a four-year
starter on the varsity basketball team. She
holds the school record for career threepointers.
College Track and Field
Laura Tarantino
left her mark on
the track at Truman
State University.
Tarantino, of
Ballwin, is one of
the most decorated
long-distance runners
in the history of
Truman State.
Tarantino
The Westminster
Christian Academy graduate recently ran
her final race as a Bulldog at the NCAA
Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships
at Bradenton, Florida. Tarantino
finished 14 out of 19 finishers in the
10,000-meter with a time of 36:35.27.
Tarantino, who majored in nursing,
became the sixth Bulldog to qualify and
be selected for the national outdoor meet
and first since Dani Dell’Orco placed fifth
in 2010. Kerry Knepper was the national
runner-up in the race in both 1989 and
1990. Grand Valley State’s Kendra Foley
took home medalist honors [34:36.21]
this year, while Chico State’s Sadie Gastelum
[34:48.37] and Western State’s Georgia
Porter [34:52.38] rounded out the top
three.
Putting Tarantino’s career in the Purple
and White into perspective, let’s start with
cross country. She was the team’s top finisher
in 21 of 25 career races including
every race since the start of her sophomore
season. She had seven individual
titles, 14 top-10 finishes and won her first
five races to start her senior season. She
earned GLVC and All-Region honors last
fall by placing fifth at conference and 18th
at regionals.
On the track, she won nine races, was
ranked 19th in Division II in the 10,000-
meter and second in the conference for
that event.
Tarantino has been named a scholarathlete
by the United States Track & Field
and Cross Country Coaches Association
and is a member of the academic All-
GLVC team. She was a third team selection
on the Division II Women’s Cross
Country/Track and Field Academic All-
America list that was released by College
Sports Information Directors of America.
To be selected for the award, a studentathlete
must be at least a sophomore in
athletic eligibility, possess a minimum
3.30 cumulative grade point average, be
a starter or key contributor to their team
and earn first-team All-Academic region
that was voted upon by CoSIDA members.
Missouri Amateur Championship
Defending champ Sam Migdal fell just
short of repeating as state champion.
Brad Nurski, of St. Joseph, defeated
Migdal, a Ballwin native, 2-up to earn his
second Missouri Amateur Championship
title.
Nurski did not trail for the first 32
holes of the recent championship held
at St. Joseph Country Club. However, a
short approach shot on the par-4 15th
hole allowed Migdal, the 2016 champion,
enough room to wiggle out a birdie and
capture his first lead of the day with three
holes to play.
Nurski then found his touch, chipping
in a birdie from off the green on the 16th
to even the score before winning the final
two holes thanks to misfires by Migdal
to win 2-up. That helped Nurski win his
second Missouri Amateur Championship.
Accomplishing the feat on his home
course made winning the six-day event
even sweeter.
“I got to do it at home in front of everybody.
I got to do it in front of my family,
my dad, my wife, my kids, all my friends
and my buddies,” Nurski said. “It means
the world to be able to do it at home. It’s
really, really hard to win at home. I got it
done.”
Migdal tipped his cap to Nurski.
“You know, I know he’s a good player
and a good match play player,” Migdal
said. “A couple putts didn’t drop, and I
thought that was the difference.”
