effort to combat
obesity, the Los
Angeles County
Department of
Public Health
released a “Model
Design Manual for
Living Streets”
and invited every
city to use it.
Reality
According to the World Health Organization, 60%
of all deaths are due to chronic diseases, including
heart disease and diabetes. Their causes, or risk
factors, are known. Some risk factors, like age and
heredity, cannot be changed. But others, such as
unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and tobacco use,
can be. In fact, WHO reckons that eliminating
these ” risk factors could prevent 80%
of premature heart disease, strokes and type 2
diabetes, and 40% of cancers.
