HEALTH BRIDGEHAVEN PREGNANCY SUPPORT CENTER MISSION & SERVICES Our mission is to empower choices for life through Christ-centered education and support. Our services empower women and men to make healthy choices regarding relationships, pregnancy, and parenting. We offer pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and advocacy; life skills classes and material support; relational health and sexual risk avoidance education; and post-abortion support classes. All services are free and confidential. HOW TO HELP Volunteers are vital to Bridgehaven’s ministry. In 2016, 400+ volunteers logged 22,149 hours throughout the ministry. We welcome individuals to volunteer on an occasional or regular basis, as well as groups who can help with events or projects. United Way of East Central Iowa Adapts to Changes in Giving United Way of East Central Iowa We’ve developed expertise in identifying community needs. - Shannon Hanson, vice president for marketing and communications, United Way of East Central Iowa Like any organization for-profit or nonprofit, the United Way of East Central Iowa is constantly adjusting to stay relevant to the community it serves. UWECI may claim some advantages in this effort, as its goals and programs are built upon minutely detailed knowledge of that community. “The philanthropic landscape has changed, so we’ve got to change accordingly,” said Tim Stiles, UWECI president and CEO. Mr. Stiles noted the millennial generation engages differently with nonprofits than their baby boomer parents. “More direct, more hands-on,” he said. That strategy plays to UWECI’s strengths in engaging its community through other organizations and individual volunteers. The Cedar Rapids-based nonprofit specializes in identifying critical needs in its service area of Linn, Benton, Cedar, Iowa and Jones counties, then working with partner agencies to address them. “We’ve developed expertise in identifying community needs,” said Shannon Hanson, vice president for marketing and communications. “We have an entire department dedicated to understanding what needs there are in the community, so we can go and fund partners that help fill those needs, those gaps we see, as well as bring together organizations that might be able to work together on a community problem that isn’t currently being addressed.” That’s a change from what Ms. Hanson calls “old United Way,” functioning largely to distribute donations to local organizations. The new United Way looks to find solutions to help make the community better for everyone. Operating on an $11.1 million budget for the fiscal year ending July 1, UWECI has ambitious goals for the next three years: n Increase children developmentally and academically on track by fourth grade by 30 percent n Increase financially stable households by 15 percent n Improve social connectedness and mental health of low-income adults by 10 percent UWECI funds 22 partner agencies this year, but works with more than 80 to develop and sustain programs furthering those goals. “We deal with a lot of root causes,” Mr. Stiles said. “For instance, you have a drop-out rate. Getting to the root cause of that issue would be, when the child is born, exposing a child to books and reading beginning at birth so that when they enter school they’re able to read and have a vocabulary of a five-year-old.” One UWECI response is RED Ahead, for Read Every Day to get Ahead. Partnering with the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP), UWECI established RED Ahead centers in the Women Infants and Children clinics in Marion and Cedar Rapids. “When the parent comes in for their visit to get WIC vouchers, the kids walk out with a book and the parents get some instruction in how to utilize the book to help their child develop literacy skills,” Mr. Stiles said. RED Ahead served 2,104 parents in fiscal 2016, with 502 children showing improved literacy. Such measurements are a critical part of UWECI’s strategy. “It’s not enough to say, ‘This program served 50 people last year, now we’re serving 60 people,’” Mr. Stiles said. “How is that making a difference? It’s the community-wide measurements and data and demographics that we collect to ensure we are moving toward the community goals.” Such data-gathering led to the creation of the Women’s Leadership Initiative a decade ago. “That initiative has grown from 30 women who started meeting in someone’s living room, wanting to talk about what it is we could do for women in our community, to more than 400 people coming together for a cause,” Ms. Hanson said. “For us, moving forward, moving even farther into those cause-related strategies to help our community will be even more important.” United Way encourages such community engagement by making it easier to volunteer – a natural fit for those hands-on millennials (and others), whatever their interest. “We are kind of the clearinghouse for volunteering” through Volunteer Now, Ms. Hanson said. The tool can be accessed through www.uweci.org. “We have hundreds of organizations that put in volunteer opportunities and if you don’t know what you want to do, there’s even a little quiz you can take,” she said. “For instance, if you’re new to volunteering, you can go in there and say, ‘I really like kids, I really like to be outside,’ and it will give you options.” Effective programs and engaged citizens are a demonstration of United Way’s place in the community, Mr. Stiles said. “We view United Way as an investment in the community,” he said. “That’s what your return on investment is: how is your community getting better?” • CBJ Giving Guide 2017 55
