ANOTHER
AWARDS
NIGHT!
LET’S GET
TOGETHER
A
FABULOUS OCCASION at London’s
historic Guildhall, where the wine
flowed and celebrity host Katherine
Ryan dazzled… But at the heart
of #MWIT17 were you guys – the British
and Irish hairdressers making waves in your local
communities and across the globe. Whether it
turned out to be your night or not, our Grand Final
was all about you and your brilliance.
So let’s hear it for the stars of stage and salon – the
educators, innovators, the little guys taking big leaps,
the masters of classic cuts, the incredible colour
concoctors, and the bold rule re-writers.
Bravo to the sharp business builders, the fierce
fashion shapers, the think-outside-the-box success
stories, the system-shatterers, hard grafters, and the
fighters who may have been knocked down but came
back twice as strong.
Big up the stylists who pour their hearts, souls, blood,
sweat and tears into high street hair havens and
booming barbershops; the community pillars, local
favourites, and loyal listeners.
Three cheers for the staff cheerleaders and staff
cherishers, the eager learners and generous
mentors, the terrific teams and the role models
and role creators in our vibrant, creative, inclusive,
PHENOMENAL industry.
We salute you, and all of this year’s champions…
A FEAST FOR
THE EYES
THE MAGNIFICENT GREAT HALL – Guildhall’s most iconic space
has entertained royalty for hundreds of years. But history was surely made
when hairdressing’s finest took their seats for the Grand Final dinner. The room
was positively buzzing as the biggest, most exciting names from the salon and
session worlds tucked into gourmet treats served up by hip London eaterie, The
Recipe – and the most delicious industry gossip too, of course…
“Such a wonderful
THE RISING STAR
FOR A YOUNG SALON ASSISTANT WHO’S ENTHUSIASTIC, HARD
WORKING AND FAST IMPROVING – A NEW TEAM STAR!
“I can’t believe that I’ve
won this award – it’s a
complete shock. I would
not be here without the
help of my salon bosses
Sally and Jamie Brooks.
Telling my mum was
amazing, and I am
looking forward to what
the future holds”
DARCIE HARVEY
Brooks & Brooks
21-year-old Darcie has assisted at London Fashion Week,
regularly tests for editorials and shoots, and uses up
half her annual holiday allowance on work opportunities.
“She is what we call a ‘yes’ girl,” say bosses Jamie and
Sally Brooks, meaning Darcie will be there whenever and
wherever she’s needed. We reckon this girl is definitely
going places.
JUDGE’S COMMENT
“What an amazing start to a career! Darcie
has assisted some incredible hairdressers,
while taking the time to create her own work
and images. She’s clearly very passionate”
believe if you want to
be successful in this
industry, you’ve got
to surround yourself
with good people, and
I have been lucky to
have that, which has
really helped me win
this award. This is a
milestone for me”
JUDGE’S COMMENT
“So good! Michael’s work experience
and attitude blew my mind”
Leigh Keates, session stylist
MICHAEL O’GORMAN
Taylor Taylor London
A favourite right-hand man to stars like Neil Moodie and
Gary Gill, 30-year-old Mike has built up an impressive list
of credits at Fashion Week and beyond. He’s assisted on
almost 200 shows, with highlights including Gucci, Louis
Vuitton, Maison Margiela and Rick Owens, is developing his
own portfolio and recently led his first show at LFW Men’s
with Richard James. What a star!

expanded into five different countries. Throw in some fully
booked stylists, thousands of salons globally talking about
her colour work and a No Judgment policy that embraces
diversity, and you can see why the judges sat up and took
notice. Bravo, Sophia. And still only 29 years old!
JUDGE’S COMMENT
“Brand identity, marketing, social media… AND
a gender-neutral campaign – it’s all excellent!”
Ateh Jewel, Couture Communications
THE VISIONARY
FOR A STYLIST OR TECHNICIAN WHO’S
“It’s amazing to win this
award, and I have to thank
the incredible team at Ocean
Hairdressing – especially [owner]
Ian Davies, who has been a
constant support to me. Thank
you Creative HEAD for putting
on such an amazing event, and
for allowing all of us to have an
outlet for creativity and to be
ourselves, which I think is really
important in this industry”
JUDGE’S COMMENT
“Dynamic, colourful, strong and energetic
imagery – Casey’s work is inspirational and
unique. I want to see more. What’s next?”
Lan Nguyen-Grealis, make-up artist
CASEY COLEMAN
Ocean Hairdressing
Drawing inspiration from club kids – particularly ’90s legend
Leigh Bowery – and the designer Alexander McQueen,
30-year-old Casey loves to construct hair pieces out
of the unexpected and unconventional, creating a hair
aesthetic with a dark and mysterious side. Ambitious and
competitive, we reckon this It List victory is the start of
something big for Mr C.
THE IT GUY
FOR A MALE STYLIST EXCELLING IN ALL AREAS OF
HAIRDRESSING AND DESTINED FOR GREATNESS
“Wow! I’ve worked so hard
to hard to win this award,
and it’s brilliant to be
recognised. We hairdressers
never take a minute to sit
down, and awards like
this are an opportunity to
reflect on the year we’ve
had and the achievements
we’ve made”
KY WILSON
The Social
Ky picked up this trophy at the sixth time of asking (“It’s
about f**king time, Creative HEAD,” he joked from the
podium), capping a brilliant year for the 28-year-old. He’s
won the Men’s Image Award at the L’Oréal Colour Trophy,
found a new London home for The Social, assisted and
headed shows at London Fashion Week and has just
become a dad. “I’m a luc’Ky boy, aren’t I?” he grins.
JUDGE’S COMMENT
“I love Ky’s passion and hard work ethic.
This cannot be taught – you just have it.
Great all-rounder.”
James Galvin, Daniel Galvin
THE IT GIRL
FOR A FEMALE STYLIST EXCELLING IN ALL AREAS OF
HAIRDRESSING AND DESTINED FOR GREATNESS
“This is a complete shock!
It’s the first year I have
entered it and to win is
incredible. I hand-made
my entry and it took three
months to prepare. It was
like my personal diary, and
when I sent it off, I felt like I
sent part of myself away”
JUDGE’S COMMENT
“LOVE! What a fabulous talent. Rebecca really
has got all aspects of the industry DOWN!”
Nicola Clarke, John Frieda and Color WOW
REBECCA CHANG
Salako
29-year-old Rebecca arrived in the UK from Mumbai four
years ago, and has made her decision count, learning
from session hair and photography icon, Jimo Salako. She
made it onto Guido’s team for her first show, assisting at
Christopher Kane A/W14, and then stunned everyone by
producing the Vetements S/S17 show for Gary Gill. It don’t
mean a thang if it ain’t got that Chang!

“It’s amazing! This is
the most important
award that we’ve ever
It’s for the team, this
is their award and we
couldn’t be more proud”
LLOYDS HAIR
Waterford
This 56-strong, fun-loving team makes Lloyds Hair a
big Irish hitter. Pizza meetings and days where the team
is tasked to pay 10 compliments a day keep everyone
engaged, but most crucial is Mystery Day – the team is
kept in the dark about what it entails but it brings everyone
together, employees of the year are crowned and trips to
New York are won. Now everyone’s a winner at Lloyds!
EXCEPTIONAL STYLIST
SPONSORED BY
“I am absolutely
delighted to have
won the Exceptional
Stylist award. I have
an exceptional wife
and I wouldn’t be able
to do any of this if it
wasn’t for her, and I
also have a great team
behind me who make
it all possible”
DYLAN BRADSHAW
Dylan Bradshaw
Dylan takes this title for the second year in a row, making
him the man to beat. And he truly is exceptional, with his
eponymous destination salon in the heart of Dublin always
fabulously busy, and his mantelpiece groaning with the
weight of numerous award wins. But it’s the remarkable
#GetBlownAway campaign in support for the ISPCC that
he’s most proud of – an exceptionally caring soul, too.
BEST SALON TEAM
“We are completely
amazed and surprised
to have won the
award, but the team
we have is incredible
and we all feel so
lucky to be part of it”
CUT & GRIND
London
It was the first time they’d entered, and they aced it. Cut
& Grind prides itself on helping each other improve all
aspects of their lives and they built the salon themselves.
Success is something to be earned, with monthly meetings
providing a forum for issues, advice and experiences to be
improved. Both staff and clients are encouraged to be “part
of the family”, and the judges were clearly impressed.
“To win this once feels like a
fluke; to win it twice you feel
you are a little bit incredible;
and to win it a third time
feels like #awesome. We
trekked the Inca Trail this
year to raise £102,000 for
our local hospital. To end up
with no toe nails perhaps
meant we’d given enough to
win the award this year!”
BEST LOCAL SALON
This is Jas’s third victory in Best Local Salon, granting
them Most Wanted Legend status. Owners Jayne and
Neil Prigent run what’s become a Salisbury institution
– creators of Salisbury Fashion Week, partners of the
RewardME scheme with local businesses; and champions
rest on their laurels? Something tells us they won’t….

“Being recognised as Best New Salon
at the Most Wanted awards is a
great achievement; we’re so proud to
gain recognition within the industry
for all our hard work - especially
from such a prestigious title. We’re
encouraged and excited from this
award alone to enthusiastically
push forward in expanding our
brand. Huge thanks to Revlon
their support and recognition”
MATTHEW CURTIS
ROSEWOOD
London
You may never get to ride the Orient Express, but this
salon will offer an experience inspired by the world’s
most famous train service – brass luggage racks and all.
Rosewood London is a beautiful hotel and Matthew Curtis
brings extra style into the guest rooms. An adapted vintage
wooden trunk is used as a portable styling station that is as
evocative as it is practical.
MALE GROOMING SPECIALIST
“I wasn’t able to make
it to the Grand Final,
and I was gutted not
to be there. The saddest
part for me was not that
I missed out on going
up onstage to collect the
award but that I wasn’t
able to thank the people
who helped me get to
where I am today”
Trophy accepted by Jamie Stevens
JONATHAN ANDREW
Jamie Stevens
A family emergency kept Jonathan away from the Grand
Final, but this win is the latest in a long line of awards for the
artistic director at Jamie Stevens. He says he was “born
into hairdressing”, so it’s no surprise he spends so much of
his time on education, with a particular passion for oneon-one
teaching. His work with the likes of Rankin and Olly
Murs shows his versatility. Bravo, Jonathan.
“Experience is never
about stuff, it’s about
BEST SALON EXPERIENCE
SPONSORED BY
NOT ANOTHER SALON
London
The bright and beautiful Sophia Hilton and her team accepted
the award to loud cheers from the audience. Everything is
fun at this iconic salon, described by Sophia as “an adult
Disneyland”. The walls are covered in paint splatters, coloured
string installations and crayon arrangements, and clients are
swept downstairs to a secret room hidden behind a bookcase
and filled with Game Boys and craft books. It’s a game-changer.
CREATIVE TALENT
SPONSORED BY
“This is the best! I honestly didn’t
think this was going to happen but
it validates the last few years of
really hard work travelling around
the country. When I came to write
my award entry, I realised that it
wasn’t about me, it was about my
whole salon, my family, my friends,
my industry friends, the clients
that I have met – everybody. This is
about working really, really hard
and being part of something bigger
than myself and I am so proud”
CRAIG CHAPMAN
Craig Chapman Hair Design
Not many people grow up in Cornwall, end up in The
Gambia and find themselves focusing on Afro hair. But
Craig Chapman does things differently – and the judges
clearly loved it! The creation of his session styling
company, HairDotCom, was a happy accident – with oodles
of work on shoots and with celebs (including The Voice and
Taylor Swift at the BRITs) and it just keeps growing!
BUSINESS THINKER
SPONSORED BY
“I want to dedicate this award
to the people I am about to
grow in the salon. The business
is about growing people, and
this is for Carla, who is my
new manager. One of the most
exciting things I am finding
about running a business is
growing new people and I
have so many people who are
flourishing within Not Another
Salon – so watch out for them!”
SOPHIA HILTON
Not Another Salon
You need to make an impact if you want to stand out on
East London’s Brick Lane, and savvy Sophia is one of the
area’s stars. Her gender-neutral pricing was ahead of the
curve, and expansion via the Not Another Academy means
she’s in five different countries now. But, says Sophia, “from
a salon perspective, I love it being small and I love the fact
that I know all my staff personally – I enjoy it.”

it would not be possible
“It’s really overwhelming
to have won this award
with so many great
entries from people
whom I admire. This
would not be possible
without my amazing
team at Hare and Bone
and I am proud to
be part of the British
hairdressing industry”
SAM BURNETT
Hare & Bone
Sam Burnett’s creative and innovative styles always turn
heads, placing him in big demand including with celebrities
such as Daisy Lowe, Laura Whitmore and Charli XCX. The
face-flattering “modern shag” Sam styled was unanimously
voted the Hair Trend of 2017 by our judges. “If you have
a bit of wave and texture in your hair, then the layers style
your hair into this relaxed, cool look,” says Sam. We’re sold.
COLOUR EXPERT
“This means an awful lot to
me. I feel that something has
really happened to the colour
industry and I think we are
on the cusp of something
massive and it’s a super
exciting time. No longer
are colourists shoved in the
basement to be colouring for
haircuts; we now have stylists
cutting for our colours and
that is really, really exciting”
SOPHIA HILTON
Not Another Salon
While Not Another Salon is well known for its bold, creative
colour, Sophia insists that her team’s approach to colour is
about elegant and healthy hair across a broad spectrum.
The judges agreed – making this a record-breaking third
Most Wanted win on the night– and Sophia used her
acceptance speech to speak out against unrealistic
expectations damaging colourists’ confidence. Bravo.
“I’m blown away by
winning this award, and
have been so lucky to work
with incredible people
who have believed in me
throughout my journey.
What I have learned so far is
that everything I do is about
teamwork and without
everyone who has supported
me, I wouldn’t be here now”
SESSION STYLIST
SYD HAYES
Receiving the most nominations from the fashion and
beauty teams at Elle, Cosmopolitan, Grazia, Red, GQ,
Harper’s Bazaar and more, Syd is fast emerging as one
of fashion’s most exciting hair talents, working with major
clients, designers and photographers. He has also taken
over his parents’ salon in Kew, ensuring this confident,
popular stylist remains grounded.
HAIR ICON
SPONSORED BY
SAM MCKNIGHT
Sam McKnight is so iconic, he’s already fronted his own
exhibition at Somerset House – Hair by Sam McKnight
– alongside a stunning coffee table tome of all his legendary
work. Credited as “the original session stylist”, he’s still a
massive supporter of the salon industry – just one of the
reasons he received a standing ovation from every single
person in the room. Feel the love, Sam…
“It’s a real honour to win the Hair
Icon award. It’s been a really big
year for me with the exhibition at
Somerset House and the launch
of my book and new hair range.
I’m hugely appreciative of the
excitement in the industry and
how everyone has really got behind
me – it was totally unexpected.
Thanks to Creative HEAD for
its support and for creating a
platform for the industry to really
recognise some of the incredible
hairdressing talent today, all
around the country”
MOST WANTED LEGEND
CREATIVE TALENT WINNER 2010/13/16
ERROL DOUGLAS MBE
Not only is he adored by pretty much everyone in this industry
for his energy and the way he mentors and supports young
talent, there’s also his impressive creative skills, both with
Afro and European hair, evident in his gorgeous photographic
collections. And at our Grand Final, as a triple winner of the
Creative Talent award, he attained Most Wanted Legend status.
Of course, we’re talking about Errol Douglas MBE!
“Creative Talent is such
a hard accolade to win, and
to get it three times and
now be honoured as a Most
Wanted Legend is incredible.
For me hairdressing is my
life, it’s in my DNA and
hopefully has passed down
to my children. I believe
there’s no industry like
hairdressing – it’s passionate
and dynamic and I am so
proud to be part of it”
OUR MOST
OUTRAGEOUSLY
FUN AFTER-
PARTY YET
WE THOUGHT WE’D SEEN EVERYTHING AT
CREATIVE HEAD HQ, until we spotted two Most
Wanted sponsors twerking onstage alongside an It List
winner plus a very glittery member of drag act Sink the
Pink. Once the ceremonial parts of the night had come to
their natural conclusion, we headed down to the Guildhall
Crypt for the sort of old-fashioned knees-up that saw
everyone on their feet, some of them on the stage,
laughing and dancing through until the early (and in some
cases quite late) hours. There were many things to take
away at the end of the night (apart from sore feet), but
the main one is that 2017 will be the year when everyone
agreed that our exciting, diverse industry is the best in
the world. Hurrah!
@creativeheadmag
Big shout out to @nathanpheonixhair
one of the best in my life!
Keep fighting for it and it’ll
eventually happen!
@kycutwilson
THE IT KY! Six years in a row I’ve been
nominated for this award and now I’ve
only gone and brought this baby home!
Surrounded by the insanely kind hearted
people that help my visions become
reality, now it’s time to sit back and
celebrate this killer journey and what
a fucking year it’s been!
“We thoroughly enjoyed
ourselves and it was a
beautifully organised
event – what a great thing
to be part of”
