participated in the Save the Children ‘Den Day’, which meant lots of good-natured but healthy competitive behaviour among the dads whilst the children played happily and enjoyed the sunshine. We do have to thank the dads (a record turnout, by the way!) for the £100+ collection we send off the Save the Children. In July, with school and nursery transition visits well underway, we were only forced inside because of extreme heat. Our ‘sunshine garden’ at LO1 has now fully come into its own, whilst the lack of shade in the LO2 garden led to creative use of washing lines and swathes of fabric in the garden followed by afternoons in the shade on the back common. Finally, our leavers’ parties and picnics arrived; the yo-yo weather meant it was way too wet to picnic outside at LO1, whilst two days later the ground and air were dry enough for a long, lingering farewell at LO2 following an emotional graduation. The teachers surprised Ruthie with an impressive Little Oaks 15th Birthday banner whilst Heather regaled her with tales of ‘where are they now?’ – the first Little Oaks graduates enter adulthood this year. Now that’s the way to make someone feel old. Holiday, anyone? Ruthie Pocock www.pennandtylersgreen.org.uk Village Voice August/September 2017 Spring Watch Tylers Green Common During April, May & June local residents 'flocked' to identify the birds we hear and see every day, on or around the Common. Spring is a particularly good time to do this as our little feathered friends show off their finest plumage, sing their favourite tunes and industriously build nests, in the interest of attracting a partner and raising a family! We circumnavigated the common on each of our three morning walks, starting from the Village Hall and walking in a clockwise direction around the back common, along and up through Millar wood finishing off at the pond. Recording territories and numbers can be tricky so we only recorded the species identified and sometimes, approximate location. Since the 1986 census the habitat on the common has largely remained similar with low gorse, hawthorn and brambles beneath canopies of Beach, Ash and Oak. Wrens, Dunnocks and Song thrush live comfortably in this environment and could be heard, more than seen, in abundance. The Black cap was also quite prevalent along with Robin, Blackbird, and Magpie. Chaffinch, Greenfinch was sparse whilst Goldfinches were plentiful. Warblers were sadly lacking with only one brief burst from a Willow Warbler heard. Blue and Great Tits were numerous with the occasional Willow Tit . Excitement on our last outing was seeing Firecrest and Goldcrest just along from Millar Wood then Nuthatch and Pied wagtail. Mallards are still numerous at the Pond along with a few Moorhen and Coot. Sadly only one or two House Martins were seen. Usually at this time numerous Swallows and Martins would be seen swooping over the Pond, collecting mud for their under eaves nests. Maybe, by tidying the margins, we have unwittingly removed their building materials! The definitive list of all we saw and heard can be found on the P&TGRS website. This will now form the basis for an annual Spring Watch beginning again on Sunday April 8th 2018.
