went down to the final point with the current
Chairman prevailing.
The final went the same way with Ali Mark
and Peter Tichbon winning the sudden death
point against old hands Maria Bailey and Mike
Dugdale. It has to be said, however, that Ali’s
victory was rather controversial as she had
started the evening partnering Andrew Barr and
swapped men midway through the round robin
phase. This sort of partner swapping is
generally frowned upon at the tennis club but as
someone said ‘well, she is Italian’. Anyway
Peter survived through to the final without
being replaced and the result clearly justified
her actions.
The following evening was the annual tennis
club golf tournament which took place at the
Wycombe Heights Par 3 course. The highlight
of the evening was a stunning victory in the
Ladies’ tournament for Maria Bailey whose
magnificent round included a Par at the tricky
17th –she lead from the start and ended as a
clear winner. (Did I mention that she was the
only lady competitor?). The Men’s tournament
was a rather closer affair with Andrew Barr,
Bob Went and last year’s winner Phil Harper all
challenging and ending up within two shots of
each other but neither Andrew nor Bob were
quite able to prevent Phil making it back-toback
wins. Mind you Phil had taken it very
seriously by withdrawing from the Mixed
Handicap Tournament the previous evening in
order to get in some late practice while Andrew
and Bob had both competed in this and were
understandably tired. Andrew Brown???
As the 2017 cricket season enters its final
strait, we at P&TGCC can look back on the
summer months with a mixture of satisfaction
and frustration at our on and off field
performances. Away from the playing side, our
‘Great Village Cricket Tea’ was a big success
and we have made improvements to our
facilities to provide increased playing capacity
for all ages. On the pitch however, it’s fair to say
our fortunes have fluctuated this year following
the Championship-winning heights of 2016.
Both our 1st and 2nd XIs have struggled this
year with injuries and the unavailability of key
players but there has still been some entertaining
cricket played in great spirit. One of the
highlights was the 1st XI match away at
Pinkneys Green which ended in a tie! An
already patched-up P&TG side proceeded to
lose their wicket-keeper and a key fielder to
injury during the game, finishing the match with
just 7 out-fielders but still managing to take the
final Pinkneys’ wicket with the scores level after
almost 4 sweltering hours in the field.
There is plenty of good news from the Colts’
side of the Club. Once again this year, Friday
night and Sunday morning coaching sessions
have been well-attended by over 80 children.
On the competitive-playing side, our age-group
sides have enjoyed another successful summer
in 2017 with our Under-10s claiming bragging
rights by winning seven and losing just one of
their eight matches to finish top of their
Division. We have also been encouraged by the
