her but never mistake her for normal”, says Will Paige,
publisher of Desert Daily Guide. “I have known her my
entire gay life. I even grew up two towns over from her,
but in better part of town. But the first time I met her,
she was doing a benefit in LA for 9-11 on that very sad
night. She yelled to the “Crowd Fuck them Germans, eh”,
then pulled her dress over her head. Everyone with tears
smiled and knew right then there would be better days
and she helped us find them.”
Ruth Hardy Park, Palm Springs
For 31 years, our beautiful desert community
has been walking to show our community support
in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Each year
since 1987, when the historic first steps were
taken, the Desert AIDS Walk, along with more
than 2,000 community members have walked
united to raise funds for the vital services provided
by Desert AIDS Project (D.A.P.)
The Desert AIDS Walk has made it possible for
D.A.P. to provide their patients and clients with
an unparalleled range of services:
Medical and Dental Care
Medications
Housing
Transportation Assistance
Behavioral Health Counseling
As an organization, D.A.P. has committed to
the bold goals set forth by UNAIDS to help
end the HIV epidemic by 2020: 90% of people
living with HIV will know their status, 90% of
all people diagnosed with HIV will be linked to
care and receive sustained antiretroviral therapy
and 90% of all these people will achieve viral
suppression making them un-infectious. The
STUDIO 13 ANNETTE MARIE
The visit to the Back Street First Wednesday
Art Walk found 4 new artists and one who
has had her gallery at the Back Street for
the past 13 years.
Annette Marie is a multi-talented creative
artist who does painting and jewelry
designing. Her gallery features paintings
from various periods of her career reflecting
back to her working with some of the
splatter painting techniques of which Jackson
Pollock is known. Most recently she
has been working with portraits reflecting
the struggle that women have endured in
gaining equality and freedom. In her own
words, she describes the portraits of women
she has created.
“In all of my paintings the eyes are remarkable
no matter what may be my criticisms,
be it technical, anatomical or otherwise.
They are remarkable expressions of human
sensitiveness.....serious questioning eyes
seem to ask, if there are some deep
sensations of life forgottin in the hurly-burly
business of living our lives. What
we need is more sense of wonder of life.”
Annette’s series of the “Veiled Women” she
says, conveys a distinctive interpretation of
life which speaks a universal language to
which everyone can respond.
Annette is one of the many world-class
artists we are fortunate to live in our community.
Her paintings are in the homes
of private collectors throughout the country.
She can be seen on Broadband Travel
Channel bel-leretv.com. More of her works
can be found on her website ANNMARI.
WWWSSR7.SUPERCP.COM. Her works
are also available to viewed in her studio at
JERSEY’S JOURNAL by jersey Shore
Everyone preaches about living a positive
life and being good to people, but they
wouldn’t know what good
was if it came in their face.
I suffer from mental illness,
yet they seem to be the delusional
ones. I can see the
realities of the world clearer
because of my mental health.
There is something in my
brain, but I can see a bullshit
artist a mile away.
You win some and Lose
some. I’ve got depression
and anxiety, but I feel my
Outlook is different than
most.
I don’t believe everything I
hear. I actually believe nothing
I hear until it’s proven to
me. It’s because of so many
lies and deception, you
expect it to be nothing of
interest.
I nod my head like a bobble
head and either let the
information I am hearing go over my head
or maybe in an ear. Then the computer in
my mind stores the data and it eventually
processes itself to be correct or just wrong.
Usually it’s wrong.
So many liars in the world. People mostly
lie to make themselves look better. Eventually
you get sought out as a liar, so just start
with the truth.
Be proud of who you are and if you’re not,
change it.
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Well the circus continues. The week begins
with resignation of the Health & Human
Services Secretary Tom Price resigning for
spending $800,000 on private planes to travel
instead of commercial and ended with four
other cabinet secretaries under investigation
for the same thing. What happened to draining
the swamp?
Some things are just common sense. I have
actually waited for Obama’s Housing Secretary
to arrive for a meeting because he was
flying commercial. What is wrong with these
people?
We have also witnessed the worst mass killing
in US History in Las Vegas. A 60 + white
guy using automatic weapons to shoot 100’s
of people enjoying a concert and killing over
50. He had over dozens of guns in his hotel
room and more at his house? Someone tell
me how the Second Amendment protects
someone’s right to own automatic weapons?
The Supreme Court majority says they believe
in the Constitution AS IT IS WRITTEN. So
- hand everyone a musket and ball to defend
their home. No need for more.
Cathedral City actually does not allow the sale
of guns - PERIOD. The rest of the valley cities
should do the same thing.
The President traveled to Puerto Rico to
tour the damage from Hurricane Maria. No
electricity in the territory. Massive shortages
of food, water, fuel. And what does he give
out? PAPER TOWELS! I’d like to blame him
entirely but who is giving him advice? Who’s
in charge of optics? Where is Melania?
The week ended with a full scale attack
on transgendered citizens with the Justice
Department rescinding employment protections
made by the Obama Administration.
Additionally, the Vice President left an NFL
game when team members knelt during the
National Anthem. He tweeted saying he
“didn’t want to dignify the event”. If he is
worried about his presence lending dignity
he needs to resign from office over the total
ineptness of Donald Trump.
The President additionally made statements
that might mean war with North Korea is
imminent. I would ask if he as any plans for
the 40,000 US soldiers stationed in the South,
or the millions of innocents in South Korea
that would be in direct harms way, let alone
Japan or Hawaii should the North launch an
ICBM in retaliation.
Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee apparently
has had enough, announcing that he will not
seek reelection in 2018. He then went on to
say how sad it was that the Administration
was governing as if it was in preschool. And
this is a Republican Senator! Where are the
others with back bone?
The Administration tax plan is now in trouble.
Once again, they are choosing to use Senate
rules that allow for a simple majority to pass
the bill and not take into consideration any
Democratic amendments. IF they lose three
Republic votes the bill dies (just like health
care). I’m beginning to think Mr. Trump
used a ghost writer for “The Art of the Deal”,
because he sure has no clue how to negotiate.
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis (Cont.)
Locally, Palm Springs is grappling with an
investigation by the Fair Political Practices
Commission based on mailings they have
done for the tax measure appearing on the
ballot in November. This news comes right
after former Mayor Pougnet, John Wessman
and his colleague, Mr. Meaney were
arraigned on bribery charges. I’m sure everyone
will be glad when the election is over in
two months. Once the new council is sworn
in all 5 members will have changed hands
since the FBI/IRS/DA raid on City Hall.
The PS Council is considering mandating
solar panels be installed on ALL new residential
construction and major remodels. I am
sure this will be controversial as well. While
good in theory, the Building Industry Association
and the Desert Valley Builder’s Assn
will, for sure, be in opposition due to the
increased cost that will be passed on to home
buyers. I am sure the Board of Realtors will
add their voice as well.
Cathedral City continues to look at the possibility
of a “sugar tax” on sugar sweetened
beverages. This measure will possibly go
on the 2018 November ballot and would
result in $2.5 million in revenue annually
that would go to recreation, health and wellness
programs. Over 47% of the children
in Cathedral City are obese. This measure
IF adopted by voters could go along way in
reducing that number.
That’s it for this week. Get of your bar stools
and asses and RESIST!!!
