Get one today and help to make a difference. The history of the Sunflower Fund THE Sunflower Fund was started in 1999 in suppor t of the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). It came about as a result of the stories of two young men – Darren Serebro (1997) and Chris Corlett (2000) – whose heroic struggle against leukaemia has since served to inspire and aid thousands of other cancer sufferers. The Friends of the South African Bone Marrow Registry Foundation was initiated as a result. Corlet t’s mother, Tina Botha, was the CEO until 2013 when her daughter, Tarryn Corlett, took over. Alana James has been the CEO since 2015. The fund aims to encourage people to register on the SABMR by recruiting donors and by providing access to tissue-type testing. The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit company (NPC) which pays for the test cost of people joining the SABMR. This is fundamental to saving the lives of thousands of South Africans each year. The chance of finding a matching donor is one in 100 000 – and as ethnic origin plays a significant role in the search for a donor, South Africa’s rainbow nation is at a distinct disadvantage, requiring a large pool of prospective donors. Well, if you have been unable to buy a tope this year in support of the Sunflower Fund initiative, then why not consider heading to Cape Town next month for the Sunflower Fund Ride 4 Hope? Assistance to SABMR saves thousands of lives GIVING HOPE: The sunflower is the symbol of The Sunflower Fund which strives to get people to register on the South African Bone Marrow Registry Picture: SUPPLIED The ride will have motorbike enthusiasts gathering at the Killarney International Raceway on Sunday October 22, with a mass ride starting from 10am. The event is being hosted by the Sunflower Fund in association with the M.O.T.H. Motorcycle Association and Killarney International Raceway. A R50 donation will help raise funds and includes a metal badge for the participant. How about a team that will represent Komani and surrounding areas?

The theme of this year’s Sunflower Day campaign is “Ordinary People who do the Most Extraordinary Things that Make a Real Difference”. “To see our topes being worn with pride is not just an honour for us, but a salute to our survivors, our fighters, our memories of loved ones ... it is a show of support, a symbol of hope,” Sunflower Fund chief executive Alana James said. Round Table No16 has pledged their support to the project as part of its commitment to help those in need. Funds raised from the Sunflower Day will offer hope of life to patients in need of a life-saving blood stem cell t ransplants. More than 160000 topes were sold last year, resulting in the recruitment and registration of another 1488 potential blood stem cell donors onto the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). The aim this year is to sell 200000. Topes may be bought from Gems or Tablers at a cost of R25 each.
