Send us your news STERKSTROOM – Older residents of the town were pleased to have former businessman George Kaldis visiting the town recently. George and his wife, Irene, now live in Greece. During their time in Sterkstroom they owned the Oasis Cafe in the main street. <strong>The</strong> couple have four children, of whom two lived with them in Sterkstroom and two were born in Greece after their return to the country in 1994. C O U N T RYWAT C H Feast of variety at Komga Show ONE of a few country agricultural shows still going strong, the Nedbank Komga Show, will run from October 5 to 7 this year. <strong>The</strong> programme will kick off with the usual joint farmers’ associations breakfast on Thursday October 5, with dean of the faculty of agriculture at Stellenbosch University Professor Muhammad Karaan as the guest speaker. FNB and Savemor will sponsor the breakfast and Karaan’s appearance in association with the Komga Fa r m e r s ’ A s s o c i at i o n . Apart from the usual stiff competition in the cattle, sheep and horse sections, there will also be a competition for poultry this year. Other highlights will be the vintage tractor and farm implements section under the stalwart Wayne King, a quilt exhibition by the East London Quilters’ Guild, the ever-popular Calitzdorp Port tasting, the Caledonian Pipe Band appearance and other entertainment on the stoep where Molly Trollope will again host her coffee shop, beautifully decorated with Avonlea p r ot e a s . <strong>The</strong> show kitchen, famous for its variety of eats, has been renovated r e c e n t l y. Round Table will again run the steakhouse and pub for the duration of the show. All the other popular food stalls, including pancakes, koeksisters, pickled fish and calamari, will be around again, with Dede and Julius, up from Kei Mouth with their culinary specials an exciting newcomer this year. Teams came from Komani, Cathcart, Komga, King William’s Town and East London. Each team played three m at c h e s . At the end of the day it was the team skipped by Ray Sparg of Gonubie which came out on top with 35 points (+14). <strong>The</strong> runners-up were the team skipped by Paul Hirst, also of Gonubie, with 34 points (+22). In third place was the King William’s Town team of Brian Maclean (31 points (+12). Fourth place went to another KWT tam skipped by Richard Hayidakis (30 points +6). An enjoyable day’s bowling was had by all and thanks must go to the sponsors, especially Aubrey Hansel, Millie’s husband. ON Saturday, 56 athletes completed parkrun event #149 on the first parkrun day of spring in beautiful conditions, Among them was one first-timer and two women from East London. Ten new personal bests were recorded. Saturday, <strong>September</strong> 9, marked Stutt parkrun’s <strong>15</strong>0th event. How many times have you visited us there? A total of 64 athletes completed the route in cool, overcast weather. It was so exciting to see the fire-damaged grass turning green after the recent rain. <strong>The</strong>re were many visitors from East London and Port Elizabeth who shared in the morning fun. Lyndon Hall notched up his 100th volunteer stint as a photographer. Thank you to him. Some of the fun activities included a jumping castle, water slide and face painting. <strong>The</strong> children loved spending time with each other cooling down on the hot day. LOCAL gospel singer Zodwa Marawu launched her debut CD, titled Ndifihle, at the Zola community hall on Sunday. <strong>The</strong> event was well supported by the community. ON SEPTEMBER 23, Ta r k a Development Group, in collaboration with Ikhala Trust, will host a Spring Festival at the Tarkastad park in Murray Street. All are welcome, and traditional attire is encouraged. A highlight of the day will be a potjiekos competition, with other fun activities planned.
