A referral from a family physician
to a specialist for particular symptoms
can be a daunting and impersonal
experience. Aside from a staff that
doesn’t know you, confusion about
new medical terms and tests are
personally perplexing and frightening.
It doesn’t need to be that way.
Endocrine Associates of Florida
Ocoee offers a better, more comfortable
approach to monitoring and
treating ailments associated with
hormonal imbalance. Endocrinology
is the branch of medicine dedicated
to managing metabolic disorders
caused by changes to the endocrine
glands. Affected hormones secreted
by the endocrine glands are insulin,
thyroid, growth hormone and adrenal
hormones.
Endocrine Associates of Florida is
a family-run, private practice located
at 1510 Citrus Medical Court in
Ocoee. Its caring staff strives to provide
the best possible health care in
a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Their holistic and compassionate approach
allows the staff time to get to
know and listen to its patients.
José M. Mandry, M.D., directs
the treatment and research. Born in
Puerto Rico, he came to the Greater
Orlando area in the early ’90s. He
is fluent in both English and Spanish
and board-certified in internal medicine
and disorders of endocrinology
and metabolism. As a principal investigator,
Dr. Mandry and his associates
are active participants in
clinical research, leading to positive
outcomes for superior health.
“The studies enable our practice
to offer more support to clients,”
Dr. Mandry said. “Patients can take
Research directors Maria Ines
Marulanda, M.D., and Ineska
Freire, M.D., both from Venezuela,
are also on staff. With more than
10 years of experience in investigational
pharmaceutical and epidemiological
studies, their work is
widely published in many prominent
medical journals.
In addition to treatment and research,
nutritional classes by a
registered dietitian are available
on request. Nutritional counseling
assists patients with proper diet for
blood glucose and weight control.
The staff of Endocrine Associates
of Florida is dedicated to eradicating
the devastating effects resulting from
diabetes, obesity, hypertension, metabolic
diseases and lipid disorders.
To that end, patients are invited to go
through a screening process for inclusion
in one of the many studies conducted
by Dr. Mandry and his team.
The practice is currently enlisting
patients interested in participating
in clinical research opportunities.
Benefits include additional contact
visits with the doctor and health care
professionals, medicines that are
provided by the sponsor at no cost
to the patient, and close monitoring
of medical problems and progress.
Patients receive a small stipend to
compensate for time and duties performed,
and there is no out-of-pocket
expense. To find out if you qualify or
to be pre-screened, call the research
clinic at 407-480-4836.
Beyond running their very busy
office, Dr. Mandry and Kathy are
active in many local community projects.
They are founding members of
the Central Florida Ballet and served
on the board. Dr. Mandry coaches
Little League baseball and is active in
Sangeeta Duggal of
Windermere released her book, A
Moment in Time, written under the
pseudonym C.D. Paul. It touches
on social issues that are prevalent
in today’s world, from terrorism to
family values and gives the reader
an opportunity to look at some of
the issues in a different light with
the help of two people from diverse
backgrounds coming together
and forming a romantic bond.
Sangeeta was inspired to write the
novel by the idea of whether the
differences of nature could find a
common ground. For example, the
two characters that are portrayed
have many differences between
them, starting with age, profession
and family life. The novel is a fastpaced
romantic thriller that leaves
The St. Johns River Water
Management District joined city of
Winter Garden leaders and others
to celebrate the start of a reclaimed
water and stormwater project. The
district provided $750,000 for the
work, which captures and stores excess
stormwater, improving aquifer
recharge and water quality at nearby
Lake Apopka.
“The city of Winter Garden is
excited to support a long-term approach
to better manage our water
resources,” said Winter Garden City
Manager Mike Bollhoefer. “This
project captures more stormwater
for the aquifer to benefit, not just
Winter Garden, but all of Central
Florida.”
Once completed, the project is expected
to capture and add 2 million
gallons of stormwater per day to the
city’s reclaimed water infrastructure.
Located within the Central Florida
Water Initiative, the project will also
improve aquifer recharge, the process
where water soaks from surface
water to groundwater, not only
benefiting the city’s water supplies,
but groundwater for the Central
Florida region.
Orlando Pride head coach Tim
Sermanni signs on to extend his contract
for the soccer team’s third season.
SOUTHWEST SPORTS
After leading Orlando Pride to
its first playoff berth in its second season
in the National Women’s Soccer
League, the club signed head coach
compiled by Lauren Salinero
Tim Sermanni to a contract extension.
He is the only coach in the
Prides’ two-year history. After finishing
the inaugural campaign in ninth
position, Sermanni transformed the
Pride during the offseason and propelled
the side six spots up the table,
ending the 2017 regular season with
the third overall seed.
“It’s exciting,” he said. “I’ve had
a great two years here. This gives
me another opportunity to build the
squad, to build the culture and philosophy
around the team, and just
be a part of this great organization.
Orlando has felt like home to me
virtually from day one when I came
here. It’s wonderful. There’s the stadium,
there’s the people in the club
and the community as well. It’s a mix
of all of those things that makes this
club unique. And having been in
football for some considerable time,
you don’t often get that complete
environment, and that’s what makes
this club very special to me.”
Local youth had the opportunity
to play with their big-league heroes
during the Major League Baseball
Players Alumni Association Legends
for Youth baseball clinic. The free
event featured former MLB players
who taught baseball skills, drills and
life lessons to approximately 200
local kids. The clinic was held at
the Dr. Phillips Little League —
Senior Field.
Alumni players trained at stations,
including pitching, catching, base
running and life skills. Players included
1982 St. Louis Cardinals World
Series champion Dave LaPoint
and 2005 National League Slugger
Award winner Felipe López, as
well as Iván DeJesús Sr., John
Koronka, Wil Nieves, James
Parr and Randy Ruiz.
Orlando City Soccer Club officials
announced the ‘Fuerza Puerto
Rico’ Friendly will take place Nov. 4.
All of the match’s net proceeds will go
to the United for Puerto Rico initiative
to raise funds and aid recovery efforts
for the island following Hurricane
Maria. The event marks Orlando
team as a player for the 2018 season.
“Our players and staff are very excited
to be part of this historic match,”
said Puerto Rican Soccer Foundation
President Eric Labrador. “We understand
that not only could it raise
money to help people [who] need it
the most, but using soccer, we can
unite all Puerto Ricans on and off the
island.“
With the holidays just around the
gifts — is the gift of good
health. Niral Patel, M.D., and the
staff at Windermere Medical
is a vital tool to managing
health, yet many people choose instead
to be reactive, scheduling an
“doesn’t feel right.” The fact is, many
of the top risk factors relating to illness
are preventable, and that’s why
preventative care is so important for
