HOW GAY ARTISTS REPRESENT THE STRUGGLE AND
ACHIEVEMENT OF LGBT RECOGNITION
Gay Pride gained national and eventually,
international recognition’ following
the Stonewall Inn Uprising in New York
City in June 1969. This event marked
the beginning of a continuing struggle
for the LGBT community to make
awareness of the human equality of all
the people identified as GAY.
Gilbert Baker designed the RAINBOW
FLAG in 1978 it was first used in a gay
rights parade in San Francisco in 1979
and now has become the universal
symbol of LGBT struggles and achievements.
Gilbert Baker died this year after
asserting that the movement for the
LGBT community is not over but only
beginning. Other artists have used the
rainbow symbol in numerous ways to
represent the pride and the struggle for
equality of gay, lesbian, bi, and transgender
people in the human community.
After gaining more positive recognition
for LGBT causes over the past decade
there is an anti-movement underway.
The advent of the Trump administration
not only overtly condoning and
promoting racism, and hatred of people
of various beliefs it has now attempted
to outlaw the participation of transgender
people in the military and take
away protection against discrimination
of LGBT people in the workplace
and society in general. Even if Trump
is removed from office, his successor,
Vice President, Pense has been quoted
as saying that all gay people should be
hanged.
Artist from all areas of the arts have
spoken out in their own medium against
Trump and his evil cohorts. From the
protest of VP Pence attending a performance
of “Hamilton” in New York to
the condemnations by actors and others
in the theater and motion picture
industries, rappers, musicians, writers,
visual artists, and others from all facets
of creativity are joining in to celebrate
Gay Pride and condemn bigotry and
hatred. Artists naturally are the heartbeat
of consciousness in a country and
they will continue to be on the forefront
to expose and rebuke the bigotry and
hatred of flawed politicians and others
in power.
The Rainbow colors have definitions
in the flag. RED stands for LIFE; OR-
ANGE represents HEALING; YELLOW
stands for SUNSHINE; GREEN: stands
for NATURE; BLUE; stands for SEREN-
ITY AND HARMONY; and VIOLET
represents SPIRIT. Now more than ever
GAY PRIDE has broadly encompassing
meaning and needs to be celebrated
with PRIDE.
