Those of you who think you’ve been everywhere there is to go here may not realise
that you’ve missed out on one or two places. Abu Dis is a Palestinian village just
fifteen minutes from M ount Scopus in which a group of English students
(occasionally) attending classes at the Rothberg School have lived this past year.
According to Gus DellaPorta, one of the three students at Abu Dis, "It’s been a
thorough immersion in Palestinian life and culture. From the very beginning the
Palestinians welcomed us into the community, inviting us to their weddings, family
celebrations and Muslim festivals, not to mention the local gym and pool hall." Says
Gus, "Our parties, which resulted in some wild Palestinian dancing and the
consumption of vast amounts of alcohol, didn’t meet with complete approval from our
neighbours, but we were soon forgiven. I’ve made many friends, met some extremely
generous and decent people, and will be sad when I have to leave Abu Dis."
