fell into the gut, spurting blood everywhere.<br />

Thomas looked upward seeking mercy in his<br />

eyes. But the Hessian flashed a sardonic smile from<br />

his emaciated face. Crooked yellow teeth showing<br />

from a mouth that could never be truly fed; a hunger<br />

that couldn’t ever be satiated. <strong>The</strong> bloodthirsty mercenary<br />

was famished for more red meat. Lingering<br />

over Thomas, letting the soldier bleed out and suffer<br />

in agony, the Hessian glanced up at the wood line. A<br />

ravenous gleam focused on Hannah.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was a dissevering sound as the Cutlass<br />

drove through his back and protruded from the Hessians’<br />

chest. He dropped to his knees and then toppled<br />

over beside Thomas. Sarah watched as the blood<br />

gushing from his wounds slowly became clearer until<br />

water leaked from the gashes, dripping off the tip of<br />

the sword.<br />

Sarah called for Hannah then leaned over<br />

Thomas. She looked into his kind eyes feeling the<br />

tragedy. Watching his head tilt slightly, she followed<br />

the line of his vision to the sword. She knelt closer to<br />

him. “Take it,” he muttered. “Melt down the blade and<br />

leave here with your daughter.”<br />

“What is it?” she said, perplexed.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> blade is silver.” He gurgled his last<br />

breath. “Take it and flee.”<br />

And with that Sarah understood that they had<br />

barely escaped the icy hearts of the Wendigo.
