Father Comes Home<br />

“Wait till your father comes home,” Mother<br />

said when Andy accidentally broke a window.<br />

He hadn’t meant to play rough, but it was a<br />

stormy night and he was bored. He tried to help, to<br />

make Mom happy and sweep up. She screamed when<br />

he bumped into a table and broke an expensive porcelain<br />

doll, too.<br />

“Wait till your father comes home,” Mother<br />

said and headed to the kitchen, seething. Father had always<br />

been the strong one. <strong>The</strong> one who went to work,<br />

chopping trees in the forest. Andy thought of father’s<br />

strength, and he was scared.<br />

Would father strike him with those huge<br />

hands? Hit him hard enough to take his head off his<br />

shoulders?<br />

Shaking in fear, Andy sat on the sofa, too<br />

afraid to turn on the TV. He was determined not to<br />

move. If he stayed perfectly still... he couldn’t
