We Be <strong>The</strong> Echo<br />

<strong>The</strong> dog laid on the kitchen table, its paws<br />

pointing to the ceiling, its body frozen stiff; only its<br />

eyes belied death, orbiting their sockets in a frantic<br />

swirl. A bootlace of saliva hung from its muzzle, snaking<br />

down its shiny black fur. Jeff formed his hands<br />

into a finger cage and, with a voice unused to speaking<br />

softly, tried his best to soothe the helpless animal.<br />

‘It’s okay girl, I’ll hold your heart right in here.<br />

Nothing’s going to hurt you while I’ve got your heart.’<br />

‘That’s not strictly true,’ said Rhonda, snapping<br />

one of the dog’s legs, the god-awful crunch<br />

shocking Jeff into momentarily letting the finger cage<br />

slip. <strong>The</strong> dog let out a heartbreaking whine.<br />

‘Hold steady!’ yelled Rhonda. She moved to<br />

each leg in turn, breaking it at the paw and at the base,<br />

her big arms flapping with the violence of the twists.<br />

Jeff gagged a little, but the cage held firm and the dog<br />

stayed silent.<br />

‘Has it worked?’ he asked<br />

She went to the sink and returned with a bowl
