AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS MORE - AND YOU COULD WIN AN OVERNIGHT STAY IN THE BRAND NEW NEW SUITE From the welcoming aromas emanating from the kitchen which greets guests as they make their way downstairs each morning to the cosy robes and slippers, luxurious bath products and even homemade cookies, there’s something rather out of the ordinary about a stay at St Johns House. Nestled in the heart of Lichfield’s historic centre, St Johns House is a beautiful 17th century Regency house which has been lovingly restored to former glory by local couple Dan and Elly Ralley over the past five years to create a stylish and welcoming bed and breakfast. The latest phase of the transformation was completed this summer with the opening of three new bedrooms in the house - including the stunning and spacious St Johns Suite. Dan says: “When we bought the house, the one issue was that we, as a family, would have to live on the third floor of the main house. It was always the plan to establish the business and then apply for planning permission for accommodation at the bottom of the garden for ourselves, which was granted and then work started in July last year.” With their new home in the grounds of St Johns House completed, attention turned to Dan and Elly’s former family living area in the main house, and work started on renovating the third floor into guest bedrooms in May. “We wanted to continue the style of blending the old and the new, and with the one room we had the opportunity to create a more substantial suite with a large changing area and bathroom,” says Dan. The newly-created St Johns suite, located on the third floor, is the very best room in the house. The wonderful space is separated into two; the spacious bedroom with a 7ft bed which looks out onto the gardens is complimented by a bathroom and changing area that is the same size as the bedroom. The decor is a stylish mix of antique finds and contemporary touches, including marble dressing tables and oversized mirrors as well as a vintage copper bath and large walk-in shower. The changing area also has a sitting area where you can enjoy a glass of champagne and relax. It is the perfect suite for bridesto-be to prepare for their big day, as well as a romantic retreat for any special occasion. “The rooms have been very well received, particularly the suite,” says Dan. “Elly and I designed them all ourselves with the assistance of local tradesmen including RS Design and Build, Liam’s Electrical and Aqua Services, all based in Lichfield and Bartonunder-Needwood.” The St Johns suite is one of 12 individually designed rooms at St Johns House; eight are located in the main house and a further four in the stables across the courtyard from the main house. 34
