THERE’S a new force in the Australian political landscape, the Australian Conservatives, which will be running its first ever candidate Joram Richa at the Bennelong by-election this weekend. Richa, a 25-year-old Maronite Catholic from Hunters Hill, was a captain’s pick by party founder, South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi. “We do need principles and integrity back in our political system. We need to give people faith in politics again,” Mr Richa said. “Secondly, there’s a growing debt crisis, a looming debt crisis that Australia faces in the very near future. “The next major issue is the issue of family and the promotion of stronger families and also the issue of radical gender theory that is attacking our childrens’ minds.” He said the Labor and Liberal parties had failed the people of Bennelong “in a number of ways unfortunately but firstly just addressing the rising cost of living.” “Their campaign has been focused more so on attacking eachother than actually addressing these issues,” Mr Richa said. “I suppose the other issue is the majority of the people in Bennelong voted ‘No’ in the same-sex marriage survey – there is a strong conservative voice in the electorate and this voice is being completely ignored in the current campaign.” “That’s what I’m here for,” Mr Richa said, adding he would “absolutely” represent that voice. The Australian Conservatives are impressively transparent on policy platform. Apart from traditional pillars of conservatism that form the key planks of its manifesto, the party is also advocating the biggest and most obvious ‘no brainer’ in the discussion around energy policy. At the end of November, Senator Bernardi moved in the Australian Senate to repeal the blanket ban on exploring a nuclear fuel cycle for Australia. Senator Bernardi explained to the senate that his home state of South Australia was the equivalent of a world superpower in uranium resources, and for its own economic benefit needed a nuclear fuel cycle to grow the state economy. He said the Bill aimed to correct an “act of economic vandalism” and “environmental self-harm” perpetrated by the Australian Greens. “They pretend that the environment is their thing, but it’s not. It’s actually about economic vandalism – that’s their thing,” Senator Bernardi said. “The most telling argument is that 19 years ago, they dogmatically insisted that there be a prohibition, on even the investigation, on even entertaining the thought of nuclear power in this country.” Mr Richa is placed 10th on the 12-candidate ballot paper for the Bennelong by-election. He endorses the Party’s Bennelong candidate Wesley Folitarik who claims to be the only local residential candidate living in Bennelong. Wesley is a professional urban planner and a passionate advocate for the Bennelong community having a greater say on the future to ensure better, not bigger development. He says the four main issues are jobs, housing, planning and the environment. Wesley says “I’m serious about secure jobs in a more diverse economy, affordable housing for first home buyers and renters, better planning to save Bennelong from overdevelopment and a sustainable environment and population”.
