46 THE LAST WORD
The most beloved Christmas tradition in America,
is decorating a Christmas tree. The Christmas tree
is actually a pretty recent holiday tradition. German
immigrants brought the tradition here in the
mid-18th century, yet 100 years later it was still not
something we did. Teddy Roosevelt railed against
cutting down trees for Christmas, saying it was a
waste of good timber. The tradition, as we know got
totaly ridiculous and largly plastic.
ABE ALVAREZ TOSTADO A
“WILD CARD” ARTIST INDI-
VIDUAL HYW 62 TOUR
Abe Alvarez Tostado grew up in Long
Beach, CA. His early inspiration was
from skaters turned artists. His early
works in art were silk screen designs on
T-shirts.
He said. “I was really into comic books
and the drawings found in them, so
I started painting on skate decks, experimenting.
We raided trash cans of
local skate shops to find their cut decks
to paint on. Today I guess it would be
called upcycling but we just needed
something to paint on then.
His art might be called a pop -Cubism
style. He says of his work, “I have my
own style that doesn’t fit into anything.
I’m in my own category, I’m a wild
card.”
We met Abe at his home - studio in
Yucca Valley on the Hwy 62 Tours. Here
we saw examples of his paintings and
other works such as T-shirt silk screens,
designed shoes, hoodies, baseball caps,
Christmas ornaments, etc. His works
is available to purchase in the various
forms mentioned and probably others
that you may desire, or he may recommend.
His contact is abetostado.com.
His gallery is open all year by appointment,
562-240-3908. In this article are
some examples of his work.
Healthy poo is nothing to joke about. So next time you ask what someones poo is like,
You might just be saiving a life. When doctors at a Bristol hospital found patients were
reluctant to describe their faeces, medics devised the Bristol Stool Form Scale. The
handy chart is now used all over the world to help patients open up (excuse the pun)
with less embarrassment. What you should be looking for...Type Four (above) is a sign
of a healthy colon, but anything from Three to Five is acceptable. Poos should glide out
smoothly, be light to medium brown, cause no discomfort, and be in one long shape.
Movement should happen soon after you sit down, and if there is any sign of blood in
the stool, see your GP immediately as it could be an indicator of cancer.
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Holidays are upon us and folks are in a cheerful
mood - especially corporations who are
getting a HUGELY big Christmas present in
the form of a tax cut. What was billed as tax
reform is turning out to be nothing more
than a giveaway to the rich.
My taxes will be going up and I suspect most
if not all who will read this column will have
the same thing happen to them. It amazes
me that the Piggly Wiggly crowd still believe
that Trump speaks for them or in any way
cares about their lives or needs.
It is deja vu to the extreme from Ronald
Reagan’s presidency. Supply side economics
was a disaster then and is no less so now.
Reagan’s tax cuts led to the Bush I recession
and then was left to Bill Clinton to fix. This
time however cuts are deeper and will lead
not only to increased revenue to the rich but
to massive cuts in government services to
the poor, elderly and children.
including our only out Senator, Tammy
Baldwin of Wisconsin. She is already facing
vicious attacks by the right. If she comes to
CA, as I suspect, to raise funds everyone
needs to try to attend and help.
Speaking of raising funds, as I have mentioned
before the Cathedral City High
School Choir has been invited to sing at the
Vatican in June. They are actively raising
money to send everyone. Airfare, hotels and
meals for each student is $4200. They are
asking everyone to donate whatever they
can to help. Checks can be made payable to
MCI/CCHS Choir, POBox 2692, Cathedral
City, CA 92235. All donations accepted and
appreciated.
That’s it for this week. Keep resisting!
One bright spot was the defeat of Roy Moore
in Alabama and the election of PFLAG dad,
Doug Jones. Yep his son is gay! While Senator-elect
Jones is not as Progressive as I
would like, for Alabama he is a liberal with
a capital L!
We are beginning to see some movement
towards a Democratic takeover of Congress
in 2018. While not assured the signs are
there. It will be interesting to see how Trump
will adapt to a new reality or if he really can.
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman
in Cathedral City. Greg was the first openly
gay elected city council members In
Riverside County. He has served on the
boards of the National League of Cities
and the League of California Cities and as
President of the Southern CA Association
of Governments.
