Warsaw School of Economics (<strong>SGH</strong>)<br />
Wh<strong>at</strong> is <strong>SGH</strong>?<br />
Warsaw School of Economics (<strong>Szkoła</strong> <strong>Główna</strong> <strong>Handlowa</strong> w <strong>Warszawie</strong>) is the oldest (est.<br />
1906) and leading economic university in Poland. Since the school was established, it has<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>ed over 70.000 gradu<strong>at</strong>es and awarded about 1.800 PhD degrees in Economics and<br />
Management. At present, there are more than 15.000 students and 921 academic teachers,<br />
and over 2500 gradu<strong>at</strong>es leave the school every year. <strong>SGH</strong> is a member of CEMS<br />
(Community of European Management Schools), PIM (Partnership in Intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
Management) network and BSRUN (Baltic Sea Region University Network). Beside various<br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e and postgradu<strong>at</strong>e programmes run in Polish and English (Master`s Studies in<br />
Global Economics and Business), Warsaw School of Economics offers Executive MBA<br />
programmes with intern<strong>at</strong>ional partners.<br />
Educ<strong>at</strong>ion is divided in<strong>to</strong> two stages. Studies begin with three-semester basic studies of<br />
subjects essential <strong>to</strong> every gradu<strong>at</strong>e of university of economics and business studies.<br />
During this period the student may define his or her interest and make a decision on the<br />
major subject from the following options:<br />
• Economics<br />
• Finance and Banking<br />
• Quantit<strong>at</strong>ive Methods in Economics and Inform<strong>at</strong>ion Systems<br />
• Management and Marketing<br />
• Public Economy<br />
• Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Economic Rel<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
• Sp<strong>at</strong>ial Economics Policy<br />
• European Studies<br />
The BA degree is granted after completing a required number of credits (about six<br />
semesters) and the MA or MSc after eight <strong>to</strong> ten semesters. Warsaw School of Economics<br />
also offers programmes for part-time, postgradu<strong>at</strong>e and doc<strong>to</strong>ral students.<br />
<strong>How</strong> does <strong>SGH</strong> work?<br />
Academic calendar<br />
The academic year is divided in<strong>to</strong> two semesters, which both consist of 15 weeks of<br />
academic activity. There are one-week vac<strong>at</strong>ions in both semesters and a winter vac<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
between the semesters <strong>at</strong> the beginning of February. Orient<strong>at</strong>ion week for incoming<br />
students will take place in the week before the beginning of classes for the given semester.<br />
