Sights, museums and galleries<br />
85 % of the city was destroyed during WW II. The Polish people made enormous effort in<br />
rebuilding their capital and maintaining its his<strong>to</strong>rical identity. There is a lot <strong>to</strong> see here:<br />
hundreds of his<strong>to</strong>rical places, some of them very unique and not only from a European<br />
perspective. These include:<br />
• Old Town with the Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy), King Sigismund’s Column, St. John’s<br />
C<strong>at</strong>hedral, the Old Town Market Square (Rynek Starego Miasta), the part of the old<br />
defensive fortific<strong>at</strong>ions Barbican (the end of ul. Nowomiejska)<br />
• Royal Castle – a n<strong>at</strong>ional monument <strong>to</strong> Polish his<strong>to</strong>ry, official royal residence since 1596<br />
(<strong>at</strong> Plac Zamkowy), free entrance on Sundays!<br />
• Wilanów Palace – the Baroque residence of King John III Sobieski, the famous conqueror<br />
of the Turks <strong>at</strong> the B<strong>at</strong>tle of Vienna in 1683, also houses the Poster Museum (ul. Wiertnicza<br />
1), free entrance on Thursdays!<br />
• Warsaw Ghet<strong>to</strong> – Jewish district with a Mausoleum on Remembrance, the Memorial of<br />
the Umschlagpl<strong>at</strong>z (ul. Stawki)<br />
• Łazienki Palace and Park – the Classicist residence of Poland’s last king, Stanisław<br />
August Ponia<strong>to</strong>wski (ul. Agrykola 1)<br />
• the Royal Route leading from the Royal Castle <strong>to</strong> the Łazienki Palace with:<br />
– Krakowskie Przedmieście Street, XVII–XIX century residences and churches built in<br />
different styles from Gothic <strong>to</strong> Classicism<br />
– Nowy Świ<strong>at</strong> Street, harmonious classicist buildings, popular shopping street<br />
– Al. Ujazdowskie Street along the Łazienki park<br />
Besides the palaces mentioned above, you can also visit numerous museums in Warsaw.<br />
Here are some of them:<br />
• His<strong>to</strong>rical Museum of Warsaw, Old Town Square 28, free entrance on Sundays!<br />
• N<strong>at</strong>ional Museum, Al. Jerozolimskie 3, free entrance on S<strong>at</strong>urdays!<br />
• Ethnographic Museum, ul. Kredy<strong>to</strong>wa 1, free entrance on Wednesdays!<br />
• Independence Museum, Al. Solidarności 62<br />
� Warsaw Uprising Museum, ul. Przyokopowa 28<br />
And as for galleries, most small priv<strong>at</strong>e galleries are situ<strong>at</strong>ed in the Old Town – Krakowskie<br />
Przedmieście area.<br />
Here are a few interesting places:<br />
• The Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Palace, Al. Ujazdowskie 6 - hosts<br />
exhibitions and install<strong>at</strong>ions by intern<strong>at</strong>ional artists.<br />
• Zachęta, Plac Małachowskiego 3 – the biggest gallery in Warsaw, hosting i.e. theWorld<br />
Press Pho<strong>to</strong> Exhibition each year.<br />
35
