Gryffe Camera Club
If you are interested in joining Gryffe Camera Club, or in just popping
along to one of our Speakers nights, we meet every Wednesday Night
at The Carrick Centre, Houston between 7.30pm and 10.00pm. Our
speakers in January are Andy Stark with a ‘Hike to Mont Blanc’ on 10th,
and Robert Quig on 17th with an intriguing lecture called ‘Wild West’.
We’ve had a packed four weeks since the last issue. Firstly, one of our
own members - Hugh Kerr – who is a keen kayaker, gave us a very
interesting evening on his sailing/rowing travels up the West Coast
of Scotland over the years. In addition to Gryffe CC members, there
were also several of Hugh’s sailing club friends and volunteers from
SUSTRANS in the audience.
The fi rst GDPU league fi xture of the season was against Motherwell
Camera Club, and was judged by Findlay Rankin. Despite his fearsome
reputation he proved to be an excellent judge and gave an insightful
critique of the prints presented to him. Luckily, neither team entered a
‘Bird on a Stick’ type photo, as he informed us on the night that he is not
a fan of that genre of photography.
Our annual competition against Hub Singer this year was judged by
Charles Summers from Edinburgh Camera Club. A friendly rivalry has
developed over the years, and both clubs look forward to the evening,
and also to winning the bragging rights for the next twelve months.
Charles contributed to the excellent evening with his helpful comments
on the prints, and the consensus was that everyone learned something
from the evening. Unfortunately, this year, Gryffe came second.
Internal League Competition 3a was judged by the Club members, the
winners being:
We held our ‘Christmas Extravaganza’ on the 11th
of December. Our Christmas party night is a night
when we all become creative to produce shows
with a Christmas theme. Some were very funny, some serious and some
more reminiscent of Christmas past.
Hugh’s show was a take on Dickens’
‘Christmas Carol’. He made an excellent
very curmudgeonly McScrooge while
Clair played her many roles: charity
worker, ghost and urchin with aplomb.
Val’s
shows were both takes on popular
Christmas songs and were very funny.
Her images were acquired from many
sources including the internet.
Ronnie’s show was called ‘I Wish it Could
be Christmas Every Year’ and was a
record of his family’s escapades over the
years with some very interesting images.
Fiona set her show to
an earworm of a novelty
Christmas song called ‘I’m
Gettin Nuttin for Christmas’
which was accompanied by
some funny photo shopped
images. Her second show
was ‘Christmas Markets’
and had images from the
Edinburgh and Glasgow
Christmas markets and
fairground attractions.
We had a very enjoyable tea break
with lots of Christmas nibbles and
finished the evening with our Christmas
Quiz, courtesy of Hugh, which was as
competitive as usual.
Our next meeting on the 8th of January,
in the Carrick Hall in Houston, will be:
‘David and Ronnie’s Surprise Package’
and as usual guests will be very
welcome.
Competition 3 is unique in the Gryffe syllabus in that the entries are
judged twice - internally by the members, then by an external judge who
will visit us in January to give us his verdict. It is always interesting to
compare ours and the judge’s opinions.
Finally, one of our members - Andy Stark- has an exhibition of his work
at The Bridge until 14th January. If you call in on a Wednesday you can
meet him in person.
