Youth Speaks Competition -
On Tuesday 21st November 2017, teams from St Columba’s
and Gryffe High School took part in the Intermediate
and Senior level Youth Speaks competitions held at
Kilmacolm Community Centre. The winners of both
the Senior and Intermediate competitions were from St
Columba’s School. The teams from Gryffe High School
were also very talented and performed well. Indeed the
Gryffe Senior Team have since won another multiple-school
speaking competition. The winners now go forward to the District
competitions to be held at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall on the 4th and 25th
February 2018.
Euroscola - Our Euroscola selection process is complete. Our
Euroscola for 2018 is Alexis Spragg of St Columba’s School. Alexis is
from Wemyss Bay and will be an excellent representative of our Club,
in what sadly will be the last Euroscholar event EU parliament with
British participation.
Primary School Quiz - The competition will be held at the British Legion
Club, Bridge of Weir on Monday 12th March 2018 with the same format
as previous years - 10 rounds of 6 questions. Local Primary Schools
have been invited to take part.
Young Writer competition - Early notification has been sent out to
participating schools.

Playgroup
What an amazing place to be!
At playgroup, children have the
opportunity to develop their social skills,
independence, creativity, numeracy,
literacy skills and many, many more…..
Over the last month the children have been developing their sense of
rhythm while exploring the musical instruments on offer. The children
worked together to create their own band and develop their skills
further.
We will be concentrating on some visits to and from the local primary
school which will assist the development of the close relationship with
the school and therefore provide a smooth transition in the childrens
pre-school year when moving into Primary 1.
Do you have a child aged between 2.5yrs to 5yrs old? Then why not
let them come along and experience the fun! Everyone welcome from
Langbank and surrounding areas.
Playgroup is held on a Friday morning (term time) in Langbank Village
Hall and we currently have spaces for children aged 2.5yrs to 5yrs. If
you would like to join us on a Friday morning or for more information

Houston Toddler Group
What a great time we have had at
toddlers recently. Unfortunately we said
farewell to Sharon as her youngest heads
off to nursery. Sharon has been a huge
part of the running of toddlers for the
last 3 years. We are sad to see her go
but excited for herself and Jack as they
start an exciting new chapter. We had
great fun with our Christmas party and
Christmas crafts. We are looking forward
to lots of fun things in the 2018. We start
back January 4th 2018.
We welcome all children age between 0-4 years old, together with their
parents, grandparents or carers to join in with the games, crafts and
play on offer every Thursday. The children can enjoy playing, making
friends and of course snack time while the adults can catch up with a
cuppa.
We meet between 9.30-11.30am so come along when you are ready
to the West Hall, Main Street, Houston PA6 7EL (next to the Carrick
Centre) ... We look forward to meeting you all.

for Refuweegee
Charity
Fantastic effort
from our school
community in putting
together donations
for Refuweegee
charity. Over 160 gift
bags and back packs
were handed in and are now heading to refugees arriving in Scotland
this winter. Thank you to all pupils, parents/carers and staff for their
generous and thoughtful gifts.
All gift bags and back packs have now been delivered to Refuweegee
in Glasgow.
Refuweegee is a community-led charity set up to ensure that all refugees
arriving in Glasgow are welcomed to the city in true Glaswegian style.
We want to make sure that when people arrive in Scotland they receive
the welcome they deserve and few useful tips too! We also want to
provide everyone who wishes to get involved and make a difference,
the opportunity to do so.
Our aim is to provide every Refuweegee who arrives in the city with a
community built welcome pack. Each pack will contain three categories
of items; essentials, Glasgow welcome and ‘letters from the locals’
and as a result of the final category, each pack will be completely
individual.
Book Week Scotland
The English department
have been busy getting
creative for Scottish
Book Week Scotland.
Their chosen theme was
‘Fairytales’ and as many
departments as possible
were encouraged to take
part. As you can see, there
was a great response from
everyone across the school.
Well done to all pupils and
staff who took part in all of
the events and in particular
those who dressed up on
Friday. It was a Fairytale
ending!
Events included lots of fun literary
activities in English, the library and
various other subjects across the
school. This included a Fairytales
Fairy Cakes coffee morning for
staff, Favourite Fairytale sheet and
Book Quiz.
Any money raised throughout the
week went to the World Literacy
Foundation.
