Dementia Friendly Village Steering
Group
At our November meeting there were 14 in attendance. Main points from
the meeting:
There were 63 replies to the survey with 50% made up of careers from in
or around the village. The fi ndings will provide some guidance on how the
steering group can move forward to help address some of the issues of
dementia in the village
Iain Houston has been working in Lochwinnoch Primary School on dementia
training. He has had three sessions of 2 hours each with Primaries 6 and 7
and put across 5 key messages about dementia. The children have responded
very well. The local secondary schools are to be approached next.
Willie Graham reported that he is hoping to arrange a meeting with the three
churches probably on a Saturday morning.
Troon and Prestwick have been sharing their ideas re their approach to
becoming a dementia friendly town. Iain showed us a fi lm about making
Prestwick Airport dementia friendly.
A second fi lm was viewed, this time a short 3 minute one made by Alzheimer
Scotland. It shows a day in the life of a person with dementia, seen from
their viewpoint. It shows very negative reactions to their behaviour and
then the same situations with really positive supportive responses to their
needs. It was very moving and it was felt that it should be shared as much
as possible.
Julie Gahagan would like offer a service which will mentally stimulate
through the use of crafts, reminiscence boxes using scents and old photos.
Also music and singing has proved very successful. It was suggested that
perhaps we could form a group in the village for those with dementia and
their careers.
Next meeting set for Wednesday January 10th, 8pm at the Calder United
Free Church Hall.
We’re back on Saturday, 20th January from 4pm
to 6pm. Our theme for the day will be the Creation
and we will explore this through crafts, story and
song. All young people will be made most welcome,
just remember to bring an adult with you. At the end of
the day we sit down to eat together and catch up with friends old and new.
Come and join us, you will be made most welcome.
