52 the advertizer Brookfield Curling Club Brookfield Curling Club celebrated a successful 2016/17 season on the ice when they held their Prizegiving recently in Brookfield Village Hall. The club plays at Greenacres Curling Rink on Monday evenings and is keen to encourage new members to come and join them in this great sport. If you’d like to “give curling a go” why not contact club Secretary Marilyn Muir 01505 503761 you will be made very welcome. Houston United Houston United held its end of season medal ceremony lunch at the River Inn on the 12th of November. The 2010, 2011 and 2012 footballers joined us for the day for lunch, raffle and their well deserved medals. Family and friends raised almost £500 for the club funds through the raffle. A great day was had by everyone. The 2010’s enjoyed their first full season of 4 a side football and our 2011/12’s will be registered in time for kick off at the beginning of next year. These age groups only formed in August and started with only 9 boys and 3 coaches. We have now grown to over 30 boys and 6 coaches. During the event We were proudly able to announce the arrival of several new female coaches and two junior coaches who will assist us. For only £20 a month boys from Houston, Bridge of Weir, Kilbarchan and even Paisley come to train with us twice a week at On-X and for weekend matches. The club is open to boys and girls at all age levels, and from all surrounding areas. See details on our Facebook page or website www. houstonunitedfc.com. Local Sponsor of our away kit, Allan and Victoria Sawers from Alvic Sliding Wardrobes based here in Houston attended the event. They were presented with a framed strip and received a huge thank you from the community. Club chairman Louis Jeffery also attended, who has just completed a new sponsorship deal for new home kit for all age groups with the River Inn and Houston Inn. For any children interested in getting into football Houston United also run a local academy for 5-9 years olds on a Saturday morning, where young players can come along, pay on the day and enjoy fun footballing activities. Ronan Watters (jnr Coach), Craig Watters, Emily Martin (jnr coach), Chris Martin Castle Semple Sailing Club 2017 Year of the cadet – Award 2 RS Fevas Castle Semple Sailing Club had a great start to the sailing season with the grant award to purchase 2 RS Fevas making 2017 undoubtedly, the year of the Cadet. All Alan Falconer’s hard work certainly paid off as the Cadets have flourished this year. By the end of the season we had nearly as many girls as boys sailing which is fantastic. Two of the cadets, Yuan Wong and Hector Wedderburn are now regularly attending Feva academy away events. The Cadet regatta was held in August and we were fortunate enough to have Tom Arthur, MSP for Renfrewshire South along to award the prizes and congratulate us on the achievement of the 2 Fevas. Push the Boat Out day and Mini Boat Show In May, the sailing club along with the Rowing Club and Clyde Windsurfing Club, took part in the very successful RYA Push The Boat Out day. The sailing club also held a “mini dinghy boat” show on the same day and will be repeating this in 2018. GP14/Enterprise Traveller event in June The first day was very challenging but the second day was cut short due to the strength of the wind which was a shame, I think that is the first time that has happened, we have had the reverse several times. Cup days We had all our usual cup days starting with the Asymmetric Cup which proved to be very challenging like the Commodore’s Cup which also proved to be another test in stamina and survival! However, the Ian Brown Cup and the Cucina Minucci Cup days were a gentle breeze. As ever topper team racing proved to the most entertaining event of the sailing calendar Away events As well as our own cup days the club has been well represented at GP14, Enterprise and Vortex events around the UK. Ladies Section The Sunday morning ladies section is now well established with a small but select group – always open for more ladies… WWWPS (Winchester Whacky Winter Pursuit Series) Now into its 3rd season the winter pursuit racing is proving to be very popular with as many boats taking part as during the summer racing. Thanks to Angus Winchester for continuing to organise this. Although at the moment it is rapidly becoming the TPWWDS (Team Pam Whacky Winter Drifting Series) – virtually unheard of fi ve Sundays of very gentle winds – but seems ideal winds for “Team Pam” in their Enterprise as they are top of the table at the time of going to press.
