SERVICES 

Excellence in Service is an important category, as customer service can 

often be responsible for having guests return year after year. We look 

for the hotels and tour operators that go out of their way to please their 

guests, those that provide a personal level of service and take the time 

to get to know each visitor so that they might anticipate their every need. 

This can be something as simple as a 24-hour concierge desk, a hotel 

manager who offers a personal greeting or a tour guide who is happy to 

create bespoke private tours – but whatever it is, we are always pleased 

when we encounter staff that have been trained in the art of customer 

satisfaction.

STYLE & DESIGN 

It is no question that style and design play a big part in selecting our 

awards shortlist. A guest will form an opinion about a hotel as soon 

as they arrive, so it is important to us that all our winners make those 

first impressions count. We’re certainly not partial to a particular period 

of architecture – but whether we’re judging a gothic castle or an environmentally 

friendly lodge, the criteria remain the same. We consider 

factors such as architectural features, use of materials, the creation of 

spaces, décor and the overall feel. We love it when we find a hotel that 

tells a story through its design and construction, or offers a design that is 

sympathetic to the natural surroundings of its location. 

LOCAL KNOWLEGE 

Knowledge of the local area is essential for any organisation, be it a 

hotel or a tour operator. The quality of service takes a great hit when 

knowledge of the immediate area is not up to scratch. Quite a few of our 

winners in this category have displayed excellent knowledge about the 

surrounding area, the people and culture. Local knowledge is especially 

important for tour operators, for many it’s a unique selling point for 

others it’s what their business is built around.

FACILITIES 

Award-winning guest rooms come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have 

one thing in common – a home-away-from-home feel. The comfort of 

the facilities on offer are of vital importance; we look for luxurious linens, 

stylish bathrooms and a coordinated colour scheme that work together 

to create a cohesive sense of relaxation. Additional touches, such as 

complimentary toiletries, free wi-fi or tea and coffee making facilities are 

always a bonus in making us feel welcome. We’re always impressed to 

find hotel rooms that embrace technology and offer amenities like tablets 

or smart thermostat systems, but this does not always necessarily trump 

the traditional – four-poster beds, ornate fireplaces or antique furniture 

can add a touch of decadence to a hotel stay. 

MARKETING 

In today’s modern age, a hotel or tour operator cannot rely on word 

of mouth to get their message out into the world. As social media has 

become a vital part of everyday life, we like to see companies that go the 

extra mile to engage with their guests, both past, and future. Attractive 

and informative websites and engaging and honest content are what 

we look for when judging a company’s use of marketing; how well they 

display their services, how up-to-date their content is, how well they get 

their brand message across, and, most importantly, how well their marketing 

can tempt us to go and see what they have to offer for ourselves.

LOCATION 

Location is one of the most important factors, but also one of the most 

subjective, as the ‘ideal’ is very much determined by the type of visitor 

and the type of hotel itself. However, there are a few factors we take into 

consideration when determining the winners of location-based awards. 

The first is convenience; that is, hotels that are easy to travel to. Many of 

our winners in this category are in convenient locations, such as adjacent 

to airports, close to beaches or found in the heart of easy-to-navigate 

cities. We are always impressed when hotels go the extra mile to take the 

hassle out of traveling and offer such additional services as airport shuttles 

or car hire services. However, we’re always excited to come across a 

hotel that is, to use a familiar phrase, off-the-beaten-track. A hotel that 

can offer something a little different, in terms of natural surroundings, 

can make the difference between a good holiday and an incredible one. 

DIVERSITY 

Diversity is one important aspect that needs to be taken into consideration 

when in the travel and hospitality industry. It is essential to have 

staff that has varying diversity to ensure that the organisation can properly 

connect with their guests. Diversity is taken into account in terms of 

gender, nationality as well as languages spoken among other factors. 

Not only do we take the diversity of the staff into account but even that 

of the facilities and services offered; a hotel or tour operator providing a 

better range of services is preferred over those that do not.

What better way is there to know about an organisation than by getting 

first-hand reviews? Customers are the best judges of any service out 

there as they are the ones who experience them and can assess whether 

they were up to the mark or not. Considering reviews from hundreds of 

customers gives us a fair idea about the general pros and cons of any 

organisation and also gives us valuable inputs for the other criteria as 

well.

It is of prime importance that an organisation has thorough industry

bustling markets. So among the many things that you can do in 

Mumbai, here are the top few that are loved by all and will surely be

Another popular one is the Crawford Market, 

which is nearly 150 years old and while Colaba 

Causeway specializes in clothes and 

footwear, here you can find a vast variety of 

items, ranging from gifts to cosmetics. 

The most unique of them all is Chor Bazar, 

which means ‘The Thieves’ Market’ and was 

exactly what its name means. Today however, 

you can find first-copy products here and 

also some antiques. Some of the stores here 

have been selling goods for more than five 

decades!

is the Char Koay Teow, which is basically 

stir fried rice cake strips. The noodles are 

fried in pork fat and to this prawns, Chinese

each morsel, the flavors burst in your mouth 

and give you an out-worldly experience that 

will make you an instant fan. 

2. Oyster Omelette 

Traditionally called Oh Chien, this dish is 

made from raw oysters that are fried in egg 

and rice flour batter and served with fiery 

chilli sauce that complements the flavor of 

the oysters perfectly. This fluffy omelette is a 

favorite among all egg and oyster lovers and 

if you’re one too, there is no reason to not like 

this dish. 

This is a soup that includes boiled slices of 

pork, fish balls, and cake served with rice 

noodles. The broth is boiled from chicken 

or pork bones to give additional flavor. It is 

topped with red chilies dipped in vinegar 

or lime. The soup is flavorsome and zesty – a 

definite winner for all meat lovers. It can also 

be made using duck meat and a dry version 

of this dish can be ordered as well. 

4. Curry Mee 

This soup is made by combining curry and 

coconut milk. Noodles and rice vermicelli are 

added to it with fried bean curd, cockles, 

prawns, cuttlefish and bean sprouts. You can 

also add cubes of pig’s blood to it for added 

taste. The taste is similar to the traditional 

coconut laksa, which is popular in other Asian 

countries. 

5. Penang Assam Laksa 

This dish may have the Indian state of Assam 

in its name but is a signature creation of 

Penang. This fish based soup is made with 

tamarind juice, chilli paste, lemongrass and is 

topped with prawn paste. The tangy flavor of 

tamarind is the highlight of this dish and those 

who love it will become instant fans of this 

dish. 

The Penang Rojak is a salad made from bean 

curds, bean sprouts, cuttlefish and a variety 

of fruits. It is topped with peanut sauce that 

gives it a smooth feel. These fruits and veggies 

combine to give delightful bursts of juices 

that fill your mouth and will widen your eyes in 

surprise. 

7. Tandoori Chicken and Naan 

This Indian dish has found its way into 

Malaysia and can be found in George Town. 

You can relish the soft and succulent chicken 

cooked in tandoor with freshly cooked bread.

of George Town, which is filled with Indian 

stores and restaurants. Tandoori Chicken has

Penang is a paradise for all food lovers and due to its cultural and 

ethnic diversity, the food here is assorted as well. The popular dishes 

here are mainly from Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and Western cuisines,

This noodle based Indian Muslim dish has

dish and serving sizes have made it a popular 

food item in Penang. 

9. Penang Teochew Chendul 

This one’s for the sweet lovers. Penang 

Teochew Chendul is a dessert made from 

red beans, coconut milk and brown sugar 

syrup, which are added to shaved ice and 

topped with green rice flour jelly (chendul). 

The cooling dessert is indeed a savior from 

summer heat and is a delight to eat. 

10. Lok Lok 

Lok Lok consists of skewered meat and 

vegetables in a hot pot. This is a unique dish 

where you can pick skewers up and cook 

them in a large pot with boiling water along 

with those of others. You can then go ahead 

and add sauces to the cooked food and 

enjoy your meal. Trying out this dish is fun as 

it gives you a feel of cooking it as well with 

everyone else! 

The best part about Penang is that you can 

find a wide variety of food which is not only 

limited to traditional Malaysian dishes but 

also has elements from other cuisines. This is
