Three reign supreme in Pioneers’ OT victory
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — Oscar Robertson once
said “if you are a basketball player, you’ve got
to shoot.”
Nobody had to tell that to anyone on either
the Lynnfield or Triton boys basketball teams
Monday during their game at Lynnfield High
where the Pioneers won a 65-63 double-overtime
thriller.
The teams combined for 19 3-pointers
in all, 12 by Triton and seven by Lynnfield.
Triton’s Brandon Baletsa (18 points) had five
in the first half and six total, while teammate
William Parsons (25 points) wasn’t too shabby
with five of his own, four of them coming at
crunch time from the fourth quarter on. Senior
captains Zach Shone and Billy Arseneault
knocked down two each for the Pioneers.
In the end, however, it was a couple of
pure hustle “Tommy point” worthy plays that
turned the game in the Pioneers’ favor.
With the game tied at 60-60 and three minutes
left in the second OT, a sloppy possession
nearly cost the Pioneers a possession, but senior
Jason Ndansi (3 points) fought for a loose
ball and forced up a shot to beat the shot clock.
Fellow senior Matt Mortellite (13 points),
battled three Triton players for the rebound
but couldn’t convert a very contested layup
attempt. It was deja vu for Mortellite as he
hauled down another offensive rebound and
got fouled on the layup, converting the second
free throw to put the Pioneers ahead for good,
61-60, with 2:52 to play.
A minute later, after Triton missed the front
end of a 1-and-1, Shone rimmed out a shot, but
ROUNDUP
By Anne Marie Tobin
The Lynnfield girls basketball
team came close to breaking through
with its first win of the season, but
let the lead slip away in the fourth
quarter to fall to host Triton, 39-
34, Monday night at Triton won
the game at the free throw line,
making 17-of-27, including 6-of 11
in the fourth quarter alone, while the
Pioneers had only 11 attempts the
entire game and made just six.
Lynnfield trailed 7-3 after one
and 16-12 at halftime, then had a big
third quarter, outscoring the Vikings
18-9 to take a 30-27 lead into the
final eight minutes, but that was as
good as it got of the Pioneers.
Sophomore Melissa Morelli
Mortellite was johnny on the spot once again,
grabbing the rebound and feeding Arseneault,
who calmly drained a 3-pointer to stretch the
Pioneers’ lead to 64-60 with under a minute
to play. Undaunted, Parsons drained his fifth
trey of the game to make it a one point game
again, 64-63, with 42 seconds to go.
Lynnfield turned the ball over on its next
possession, giving the Vikings 20 seconds
and a chance to run out the clock and win the
game, but the Vikings heaved up an airball on
a 3-pointer. Senior captain Dan Jameson (7
points) and Ndansi battled to prevent Triton
from saving the ball to give Lynnfield the ball
with nine ticks left on the clock. Shone was
intentionally fouled and converted the second
free throw to make it 65-63 with 7.6 seconds
left. Tight defense forced a Triton miss on a
long three to seal the win for Lynnfield.
Lynnfield coach Scott MacKenzie said it’s
the little things that kids like Mortellite (13
points) do that make a big difference.
“I’m not surprised that it was Mort making
those plays, it’s always Mort, he is scrappy
and he is super competitive,” MacKenzie said.
“He’s an athlete and always seems to come
up with big clutch plays. A double overtime
game, that was a real good high school game.
I don’t think we shot the ball particularly well
considering at the end of regulation we had
only 52 points, but we’ll take it, man.”
Triton shut down Arseneault, who was
averaging nearly 29 points in his last three
games, with a double team, holding him to
just 12 points (nine of them in regulation).
Shone stepped up in a big way with 24 points.
He carried the offense in the third quarter with
scored a team-high 10 points, while
senior captain Lizzie Shaievitz
scored eight points and fellow senior
captain MacKenzie O’Neill had
seven. Freshmen Grace Klonsky
and Caroline Waisnor scored two
points each.
At Lynnfield Friday night, too
many turnovers and poor shooting
plagued the Pioneers. They trailed
by just four, 11-7 after the first
quarter, but back-to-back four point
frames put the Pioneers in a 33-15
hole after three.
“Our turnovers were too high,
more than 30, and our guards got
frazzled by the pressure,” said
Lynnfield coach Jim Perry. “We
also had foul trouble early, but I
thought my fours and fives played
great, our rebounding continues to
be great, but we need more offense.”
Shaievitz scored a team-high
eight points and hauled down eight
boards, while Tori Morelli scored
seven points and had seven rebounds.
Melissa Morelli chipped in
with six points and nine rebounds.
O’Neill (4 points, six rebounds) and
Klonsky (2 points, 2 steals, 2 blocks)
also scored.
At North Reading Friday night,
the Pioneers improved to 7-2 with a
win over their archrival. Lynnfield
led by six, 38-32, at the half and
51-40 after three. Billy Arseneault
had another big night with 25 points
while Zach Shone (16 points) and
Matt Mortellite (12 points) also hit
double figures. Dan Jameson (6
points), Jason Ndansi (3 points) and
nine of the Pioneers’ 18 points, helping to
turn around a 1-point halftime deficit (28-27)
into a 45-40 after three.
“I thought it was a good game plan by
them,” said MacKenzie. “They wanted to
run two guys at Billy all night and we kept
reminding the guys that we have four other
dudes and a 4-on-3 with kids like Zach and
the others who can make plays. Zach is one
Jack Ford (3 points) also scored.
Lynnfield 77, Amesbury 71
At Amesbury Jan. 9, Lynnfield
(6-2) led throughout most of the first
half, leading by six after the first
quarter, 19-13, and by six at halftime,
35-29. Amesbury exploded
for 27 points in the third quarter
to lead, 56-49, into the final eight
minutes. But Lynnfield turned tables
in the fourth quarter, outscoring
the Indians 28-15. Arseneault (29
points) and Shone (20 points) were a
two-man show in the fourth quarter
with 12 and 11 points to lead the
Pioneers, who knocked down four
timely treys (two by Shone, one
each by Marengi and Arseneault) in
the final eight minutes. Ndansi also
hit double figures with 12 points,
while Mortellite (8 points), Marengi
(5 points) and Ford (3 points) also
of those kids who is just a professional offensive
player and he showed that tonight.”
Lynnfield got off to a sluggish start and
trailed 7-2 with a little more than two minutes
to go in the first quarter. Freshman Jack
Ford (3 points) knocked down a three from
the corner to cut the deficit to 7-5 with 1:55 to
play. Triton ran off five straight to close out
the quarter with a 12-7 lead.
Junior Jack Cleary (3 points) came in off the
bench to start the second quarter and sparked
an 8-0 Pioneer run. He drained a 3-pointer 10
seconds in and, after a bucket by Mortellite,
the Pioneers were tied, 12-12. On their next
possession, Cleary grabbed an offensive rebound
and fed Arseneault for a trey to give the
Pioneers their first lead of the game, 15-12.
Triton responded with a 16-7 run to lead 28-22
with 1:02 left in the half, but Lynnfield closed
out the half with a 5-0 run on a three by Jameson
and bucket by Ndansi after he grabbed an offensive
re board off the offensive glass to send the
Pioneers into halftime trailing by just one, 28-27.
Lynnfield outscored Triton 18-12 in the
third, but struggled in the fourth with only
seven points, five of them by Shone, including
a free throw to tie the game at 52 all with 3.3
seconds left in regulation.
Triton went on a 6-0 run to start the first
overtime session, which Lynnfield matched
to force a second OT. A Shone putback and
Jameson backdoor layup, off a pretty feed
from Arseneault, closed the deficit to 58-56.
Then Jameson cooly knocked down two free
throws with 1:04 left to force a second overtime
session.
Girls basketball comes close, but Triton prevails
scored.
