Community board keeps Sumner pool afloat
• By Bridget Rutherford
THE SUMNER community
pool committee’s finances
will stay afloat after a
recommendation not to give
it funding for repairs was
dismissed.
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
unanimously decided last
week to grant $4000 to the
Sumner Community Pool
Inc towards the cost of fixing
leaks.
Originally city council staff
said the application requesting
$6688 did not fit the criteria
for the board’s discretionary
response fund because it was
“capital works”.
Staff recommended
the board decline
the request. But at
the board’s meeting,
city councillor Yani
Johanson moved a
motion to grant money
from the fund anyway.
He said the $4000
grant was in line with
what the group received
last year.
“I am very supportive of the
Sumner pool as this has been a
tremendous community asset
Yani
Johanson
over a number of years run by
dedicated people in the local
area.”
The board also
requested staff advice
on the availability of
chemicals for the pool.
Work to fix leaks in
the 25m outdoor pool
would cost $6688. The
pool committee would
make up the shortfall.
Board member
Darrell Latham
seconded Cr Johanson’s
motion.
He said in spite of the
staff recommendation, the
board recognised it was
important for the work to be
done because the pool was
a “well run and widely used
community asset”.
“I’m thrilled with this
outcome as this is such a well
used community facility.”
Most of the running costs
for the community-owned
and managed pool come from
key rental, with about 360 keys
available for local families to
rent at $150 a season.
•The pool is due to open
for the summer season on
Diamond Harbour ferry wharf injury fears
•From page 1
Mr Milligan said they carried
about 2000 passengers a
week.
He said they wanted a floating
pontoon, like on the Lyttelton
side, but he understood
it wasn’t a quick fix.
“We just wanted to start the
conversations around it.”
The board asked city council
staff to look into whether any
maintenance could improve
safety and access.
City council neighbourhood
and sports parks operations
manager Al Hardy said Black
Cat had raised accessibility
concerns about the wharf.
“Council will respond to any
concerns about safety as they
arise.”
Mr Hardy said there was
$4.24 million budgeted in the
long term plan to replace the
wharf. But that was spread
between 2022-2025.
“If funds where bought
forward in the long term
plan, to replace the wharf, it
is highly likely other projects
would need to be pushed out;
this is a decision for council
to make during the LTP
process.”
He said any redesign would
include maximising safety and
ease of use.
The city council had also
received a complaint recently
about the slipperiness of the
dinghy ramp on the wharf,
which was inspected and
cleaned, Mr Hardy said.
Mr Milligan said their ideal
situation was for the wharf’s
replacement to be brought
forward.
Diamond Harbour
Community Association
chairman Richard Suggate
said some people who were
elderly, had young children
or were disabled, chose not to
take the ferry because of the
access issues. He welcomed the
city council looking into the
issue.
“It’s an important lifeline for
the community.”
