Community board keeps Sumner pool afloat<br />

THE SUMNER community<br />

pool committee’s finances<br />

will stay afloat after a<br />

recommendation not to give<br />

it funding for repairs was<br />

dismissed.<br />

The Linwood-Central-<br />

Heathcote Community Board<br />

unanimously decided last<br />

week to grant $4000 to the<br />

Sumner Community Pool<br />

Inc towards the cost of fixing<br />

leaks.<br />

Originally city council staff<br />

said the application requesting<br />

$6688 did not fit the criteria<br />

for the board’s discretionary<br />

response fund because it was<br />

“capital works”.<br />

Staff recommended<br />

the board decline<br />

the request. But at<br />

the board’s meeting,<br />

city councillor Yani<br />

Johanson moved a<br />

motion to grant money<br />

from the fund anyway.<br />

He said the $4000<br />

grant was in line with<br />

what the group received<br />

last year.<br />

Sumner pool as this has been a<br />

tremendous community asset<br />

over a number of years run by<br />

dedicated people in the local<br />

area.”<br />

The board also<br />

requested staff advice<br />

on the availability of<br />

chemicals for the pool.<br />

Work to fix leaks in<br />

the 25m outdoor pool<br />

would cost $6688. The<br />

pool committee would<br />

make up the shortfall.<br />

Darrell Latham<br />

seconded Cr Johanson’s<br />

motion.<br />

He said in spite of the<br />

staff recommendation, the<br />

board recognised it was<br />

important for the work to be<br />

done because the pool was<br />

a “well run and widely used<br />

community asset”.<br />

“I’m thrilled with this<br />

outcome as this is such a well<br />

used community facility.”<br />

Most of the running costs<br />

for the community-owned<br />

and managed pool come from<br />

key rental, with about 360 keys<br />

available for local families to<br />

rent at $150 a season.<br />

November <strong>11</strong> at 7am.<br />

Mr Milligan said they carried<br />

about 2000 passengers a<br />

week.<br />

He said they wanted a floating<br />

pontoon, like on the Lyttelton<br />

side, but he understood<br />

it wasn’t a quick fix.<br />

“We just wanted to start the<br />

conversations around it.”<br />

The board asked city council<br />

staff to look into whether any<br />

maintenance could improve<br />

safety and access.<br />

City council neighbourhood<br />

and sports parks operations<br />

manager Al Hardy said Black<br />

Cat had raised accessibility<br />

concerns about the wharf.<br />

“Council will respond to any<br />

concerns about safety as they<br />

arise.”<br />

Mr Hardy said there was<br />

$4.24 million budgeted in the<br />

long term plan to replace the<br />

wharf. But that was spread<br />

between 2022-2025.<br />

“If funds where bought<br />

forward in the long term<br />

plan, to replace the wharf, it<br />

is highly likely other projects<br />

would need to be pushed out;<br />

this is a decision for council<br />

to make during the LTP<br />

process.”<br />

He said any redesign would<br />

include maximising safety and<br />

ease of use.<br />

The city council had also<br />

received a complaint recently<br />

about the slipperiness of the<br />

dinghy ramp on the wharf,<br />

which was inspected and<br />

cleaned, Mr Hardy said.<br />

Mr Milligan said their ideal<br />

situation was for the wharf’s<br />

replacement to be brought<br />

forward.<br />

chairman Richard Suggate<br />

said some people who were<br />

elderly, had young children<br />

or were disabled, chose not to<br />

take the ferry because of the<br />

access issues. He welcomed the<br />

city council looking into the<br />

issue.<br />

“It’s an important lifeline for<br />

the community.”<br />
