Outcry forces Ferry Rd rethink
• By Caitlin Miles
THE WOOLSTON community
has had a major win against the
city council to stop car parks
from being removed outside the
Ferry Rd shops.
At the Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board meeting
on Wednesday, a decision was
made to scrap the Woolston
section of the Ferry Rd Master
Plan, after public outcry.
More than 700 people signed
a petition against the removal
of 56 car parks, which is 72 per
cent of spaces
outside the
Woolston
shops between
Portman St
and St John
St, while 56
per cent were
against the
Woolston section of the master
plan.
This means city council staff
will head back to the drawing
board, to start the Woolston
section again.
The Ferry Rd Master Plan
runs from one end of Ferry Rd
in the city along to Ferrymead.
The work on this plan was
expected to cost $1.6 million.
The plan was created in 2014
and the Woolston section of the
RELIEF: Following a petition with more than 700 signatures strongly opposing the removal of
car parks on Ferry Rd, the Woolston section of the Master Plan will be changed to retain more
spaces.
project was put out for public
consultation from May to June
this year.
Hagley-Ferrymead Community
board chairwoman Sara
Templeton (left) said it was yet
to be decided how many car
parks had been saved, but city
council staff had indicated it
would be quite a few.
Woolston Bakery owner
Sunhuar Sear is relieved
the changes are being made
following his submission on the
plan.
“It’s good for us to keep the
car parks outside of the business
because we could lose business
if the parks are taken away,” Mr
Sear said.
The plan also involved lowering
the speed limit to 30km/h,
which 29 people opposed.
“I understand people want it
to feel like a village but it is also
a through road and 30km/h is
just too slow,” Mr Sear said.
Ms Templeton said the
new plan should not delay
construction, which was due to
begin in July 2017.
The revised plan, once
drafted, will be out for public
consultation in February, timed
with the Heathcote and Oak St
enhancement public consultation.
“It was really clear there had
been some concerns. There has
been some conflict between
those who want it beautified
and those who live far away and
just see it as a through route, so
it needs balancing,” Ms Templeton
said.
In Brief
NEW PLAYCENTRE
The Spreydon-Heathcote
Community Board has
recommended the city council
approve the Canterbury
Playcentre Association lease
to establish a new playcentre
over part of Simeon Park in
Addington. The association wants
to use 1367 sq m of the park for
the playcentre, which would be
located next door to Addington
School.
LIBRARY DISCUSSIONS
The city council has started early
engagement with the community
about what it wants in their
library, including where it should
be located. Currently there is a
transitional volunteer library
located on Ferry Rd. There is $1.6
million budget for the project.
CAKE WITH A CONSCIENCE
Food manufacturer Original
Foods Baking Co has helped
raise more than $56,000 for
the Countdown Kids Hospital
Appeal over the past three years.
The company has baked about
56,000 cakes for the appeal.
The Cake with a Conscience
baking is to help provide muchneeded
medical equipment to
11 children’s hospital wards
around the country, including
Christchurch Hospital.
