Pool report delayed
• By Caitlin Miles
AN URGENT report requested
on the Linwood-Woolston pool
will not be available until the
new city council meets.
Local leaders say it is not good
enough that the city council
is yet to complete the progress
report, which was requested in
June.
Another report on installing
traffic lights at the intersection
of Hoon Hay, Worsleys and
Cashmere Rds was requested at
the same time.
This report has already come
back and work is now scheduled
to begin.
Cr Yani Johanson said he
met city council chief executive
Karleen Edwards yesterday to
understand why the report,
which he requested, was taking
so long.
“I asked for a fuller response
on where the project is at and
why it’s taking so long. My
understanding is that she took
that on board and will get staff
to report back to me on it,” Cr
Johanson said.
Cr Johanson said he wants the
report presented at the next city
council meeting on Thursday or
“at least an update” on it.
A city council spokeswoman
SITE: A report on the proposed Linwood-Woolston pool has
been delayed. The preferred location for a new pool is the old
nursery site on Smith St.
said work is underway by staff
on defining the scope of the
project, but given the elections
are coming up “it’s more appropriate
that it is considered by the
incoming council.”
The Linwood-Woolston pool
development has faced several
set backs since the Woolston
Outdoor Pool, which was
located at the former Woolston
School, was demolished 10 years
ago.
A new pool was meant to
be completed in 2018, but
now construction won’t begin
until 2020 after the city council
pushed out funding.
Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board chairwoman
Sara Templeton said she felt
disappointed by the lack of
progress being made.
“I’m really disappointed there
hasn’t been as much communication
with the board and the
community on development of
the Linwood-Woolston pool as
we would have liked by now,”
Ms Templeton said.
Cr Paul Lonsdale said “it was
disappointing” to not have the
report back.
“Cr Johanson and I worked
hard to get the money on budget
and we don’t want momentum
to stop,” Cr Lonsdale said.
Recently Southern View
quizzed Linwood Ward city
council candidates on where
they thought the pool should go
and the old plant nursery site on
Smith St was picked as the best
location.
STRONG COFFEE: Linwood resident Sam Laurie was named the
best barista at the Columbus Coffee National Championship.
Top barista found
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
LINWOOD’S SAM Laurie makes
between 400-500 coffees a day,
so it is no wonder he can make a
good brew.
In fact, his coffees are so good
he has been named the best
barista at the Columbus Coffee
National Championship, held in
Auckland recently.
Mr Laurie said it was a huge
achievement and he had been
working hard to perfect his coffee
since he started at Columbus
Coffee Riccarton about three
years ago.
The 25-year-old started out as a
barista at the Honeypot Cafe on
Colombo St when it re-opened
after the earthquakes in 2013.
“It wasn’t until I started at
Columbus Coffee that I started
nailing my passion,” he said.
He never was much of a coffeedrinker
in high school but now his
favourite coffee to make is a shortblack
because it is “the closest
flavour to coffee you can get.”
