Fear of sediment entering river
• By Noah Graham
CITY COUNCIL need to act
quickly to stop sediment runoff
damaging the Heathcote
River and nearby streams, local
groups say.
Last month’s Port Hills
fire left the hillsides bare
and with a lack of vegetation
with the potential
for sediment run-off to
cause irreparable damage,
Cashmere Stream
Care Group chairperson Ken
Rouse said.
Mr Rouse said it is only a
matter of time before there is a
heavy rain storm in Christchurch
which could cause sediment
to wash off the hillside.
He said city council need to
act fast and allocate enough
money to do the job properly
if they are to limit
the amount of damage to
waterways.
Spreydon-Cashmere
community board member
and Opawaho Heathcote
River Network co-chairwoman
Helene Mautner
(left) said she was “very concerned”
by the sediment issue.
She said an increase of ash and
soil in the Heathcote River could
Tags cleaned off Woolston
monument’s protective panels
Graffiti has been cleaned from
the protective panelling on the
Woolston Borough Monument on
Wednesday after the city council
was informed last Monday by
Southern View it had been tagged.
About $23,000 was spent to install
the panels which were tagged
within three weeks of being put in
place. The panels were cleaned
with a solvent and its anti-graffiti
film did not need to be replaced.
The work cost $60 for the solvent
plus four hours of labour.
have devastating effects on the
aquatic life.
Dr Mautner said the sediment
blocks sunlight to the plants
which will result in a knock-on
effect that will impact the whole
ecosystem.
She said revegetation needs to
start as soon as possible.
Environment Canterbury
service delivery senior manager
Brett Aldridge said sediment is
detrimental to the health of the
waterways as it smothers the
aquatic life.
He said ECan are working
with city council to provide
landowners with good information
on erosion and sediment
control, as well as biodiversity
expertise.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said
city council staff are looking at
options immediately to reduce
the risk and include creating silt
traps by felling damaged trees,
using straw bales as barriers to
stop silt finding its way to waterways,
as well as reseeding and
initial replanting of hillsides.
