Hotel for Leeston under way

IT HAS been a long time
between drinks, but the longawaited
replacement for the
Leeston Hotel, The Crate and
Barrel, is on its way.
Work began at the Market
St site last Monday when the
fences went up.
Owner Craig Bradford, who
also co-owns the Famous
Grouse Hotel in Lincoln, said
the pub would be rebuilt within
12 months, but he is aiming for
an earlier opening in February
for the $3.2 million build.
The community has been
without a pub since the Leeston
Hotel was demolished in 2011,
due to earthquake damage in
the September 4, 2010, and
February 22, 2011, earthquakes.
Mr Bradford said it had been
a bit of lengthy wait for residents.
“Because of the earthquake,
the laws and regulations have
changed. We have to make
sure we comply by it, it’s no
one’s fault in particular,” he
said.
But now work was well underway
on the old English-style
pub.
It will include a motel, backpackers,
restaurant, TAB and

FOR DRAINAGE
NETWORK PURCHASED
THe district council recently
purchased land in Lincoln near the
new Rail Trail path. The land is next
to Ellesmere Rd and it allows the
stormwater and drainage network
to continue to be upgraded to cater
for Lincoln’s current and future
growth. This is part of the 17ha of
wetland on Ellesmere Rd which
is part of a system to treat storm
water from parts of the town. To
continue these works, the culvert
under the junction of Edward St
and Ellesmere Rd will be upgraded
to carry a 50 year storm water event
and the downstream channel will
be upgraded to cater for larger
flows and allow spring water and
stormwater to be separated.
DECISION ON ANNUAL
PLAN
The district council will decide
whether or not to adopt the
Annual Plan for 2016/2017 at
the district council meeting on
Wednesday. The annual plan sets
out the council’s financial and
operational plan for the financial
year ending June 2017. The
long-term plan was adopted this
month and describes what the
council plan to do for the next 10
years. This will set in place financial
plans for the second year of the
annual plan.
