SELWYN TIMES Tuesday June 21 2016 7 News Permanent slow speed signs • By Hannah Samson-Barry LINCOLN motorists will be getting a reminder to slow down, with permanent digital speed signs being installed. Lincoln Community Committee wanted to install digital speed signs around the town to remind people of the speed they should be travelling at when entering the township. The district council has a series of the signs on rotation around the district, but committee chairwoman Ivy Harper said they wanted the signs to stay in Lincoln. “Our community is growing so much, we wanted a regular reminder,” Mrs Harper said. The permanent signs will placed on Edward St, Birchs Rd and Gerald St. The committee enlisted the help of companies around Canterbury to pay for the permanent signs as they are “quite expensive.” The supply, installation and commission per sign is $9600, making a grand total of $28,800 for all three signs. Funders included Fulton Hogan, Lincoln Developments Ltd, BHL Trust, Broadfield Estates and Ngai Tahu. There is currently a temporary council sign on Boundary Rd, one of those the council has on rotation throughout the district. Mrs Harper said that the committee was keen to ensure that the signs were available, so they lobbied for sponsorship, which was gratefully received. The signs are yet to be installed but now that the money has been raised it is a case of getting them installed and up-and-running. The signs will be installed by the district council’s maintenance contractor, HEB Construction is expected to start in about a month. HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you think these signs will help reduce speed? Fine for using pepper spray • By Andrew King A TOURIST who lashed out with pepper spray after consuming alcohol and cannabis at an Arthur’s Pass backpackers has been fined $600. Tourists staying in the hostel had to flee Simon Christopher Haas who became paranoid and lashed out with pepper spray he had brought into the country from Germany. Haas admitted one charge of possessing a disabling substance in the district court on June 16. He is from Liechtenstein, a German-speaking, principality between Austria and Switzerland. Haas was arrested on June 9 after he discharged the spray through a dormitory to deter what he thought were his attackers. Senior Constable Tony Beaumont arrived to find a number of people recovering from being blasted with pepper spray. “Turns out the man who called us thought he was being attacked but was actually just paranoid. The others were just going about their business,” he said. None of the people hit by the spray have pressed charges. “He was quite confused when we turned up. He was unsure why we were there. He came right after a few hours,” Senior Constable Beaumont said. 2016 Sensation Selwyn Awards Lincoln Event Centre, Saturday 30 July 2016, $75 per ticket Tickets On Sale Now!!
