Pride prepare for final
• By Gordon Findlater
HOSTING THE National
Women’s League final against
Capital on Sunday is something
the Canterbury United Pride
could only dream about a
fortnight ago.
Going into the final day
of round-robin fixtures on
November 27, the Pride were just
an outside chance of finishing
the regular season in top spot.
They needed to defeat Central
Football and hope that WaiBop
could hold defending champion
Northern Football to at least a
draw.
After being held to a 1-1 draw
by Central, the Pride’s hopes of
hosting a home final were all
but over. It was with little hope
that the team then turned their
attention to the Northern v
WaiBop game.
“We were following it on
Twitter and we saw that
Northern went up by two goals
so we thought it was game over.
We looked later on in the match
and it was 1-0, 2-2, then 3-2 to
WaiBop,” said Pride captain
Annalie Longo.
The massive upset meant the
Pride would not only host a
home final, but get a weekend
off while WaiBop and Capitol
played for the second final spot
last weekend.
The upset also meant the Pride
now have the chance to go one
TWO CANTERBURY rugby
league legends have been named
as World Cup ambassadors.
Frank Endacott and Gary
Clarke will lead the charge in
Christchurch, promoting the
tournament in New Zealand and
Australia next year.
Endacott was the Kiwis coach
from 1995-2000 for 13 tests. He
BIG OCCASION: Canterbury United Pride captain Annalie
Longo is confident her side can return to the summit of national
women’s football when they face Capital in Sunday’s final.
better than 2015. After winning
back-to-back titles in 2013 and
2014, the Canterbury team were
defeated by Northern Football in
last year’s final 3-4.
Sunday’s opposition, Capital,
booked their spot in the final
in dramatic fashion defeating
WaiBop 4-2 on penalties last
weekend. The Pride met Capital
on one occasion this year
winning 3-1.
“That result is a big confidence
boost going into the final, but
they’ve improved hugely since
and have a couple of key players
we will have to nullify, said
Longo.
The occasion will be a new
level for much of the Pride’s
also coached the Warriors in the
late 1990s and then had a successful
stint coaching in England.
Endacott coached Wigan Warriors
from 1999-2001 and was
named Super League’s Coach of
the Year after leading Wigan to a
grand-final appearance.
Clarke was a Kiwi scrum-half
in the late 1960s and made his
mark later as a coach, leading the
young core of players. At 25,
Longo is easily one of the oldest
Pride players. Many in the squad
are still at school, including
14-year-old midfielder Macey
Fraser who scored her first
National Women’s League goal
three weeks ago.
“The girls are incredibly young
and it will be the biggest game
that a lot of them have played
in. For me, it’s just about being
composed and relaxed and
ensuring we play our own style
of football. Hopefully, they can
go out there with confidence
and enjoy the occasion,” said
Longo.
JESSIE ANDERSON has claimed
a national athletics title just a
the first time, helped Villa Maria
The team of Anderson, Olivia
her attention to hockey and
TWO TENNIS teams with
no shortage of recent history
will face off in a top of the
table clash at the ASB Men’s
Premier Canterbury interclub
competition this weekend.
Waimairi have gone unbeaten
through six rounds of the
competition and will face threetime
defending champion’s
Cashmere with every intention of
coming away with a victory.
The two teams have met in
the past three interclub finals,
night.
“The role is to drum up interest
for the tournament and spread
the word. We want to make sure
that we have a good turnout for
the two games in Christchurch,”
said Endacott.
