I would really like one in my garden but do not know much about them. I would like a bush, not a big tree as I don’t have the room. What soil do they like and would one grow here in Aranui? My soil is not sandy at all. I love the garden questions and answers as they are a great help. Congratulations! Today’s winning question came from Bev McIntosh ANSWER There should be no problems growing lilacs in your part of Christchurch. They prefer a position in full sun with a free draining soil. If your soil is heavy, then add in Daltons Compost and mix well with existing soil. This will help with drainage and give the plant the best start. Rather unusually, lilacs prefer an alkaline soil which is not that common in New Zealand and therefore respond to an annual side dressing of lime. Mulch during the summer months and water at regular intervals until the plant becomes well established. While lilacs can grow to a considerable size, they can be easily pruned to maintain an optimum height of around 2.5 metres. They should be pruned immediately after flowering. Lilacs flower in spring with a superb fragrance and they can usually be purchased from garden centres in winter. The ‘classic lilac’ is coloured as the name suggests, however with various hybrid varieties now available, you can get ones with red, purple, white or pink flowers.
