Nurses, you are doing an incredible job under stressful conditions and I’m sure most patients realise this. It’s the people sitting behind the desks that have to get behind you! To them: be proactive and help out! Christchurch needs an energised and positive healthcare workforce not a depleted, exhausted one. Dedication acknowledged JOHN KEY’S resignation on Monday is the kind of event that proves the tired old cliché that a week is a long time in politics. No one saw it coming and it has earned acres of column space speculating on why and what happens next. Well the short answer to that is on Monday, the National MPs will hold a special caucus meeting and they will elect a new Prime Minister. I wish John Key well with the next chapter in his life. Politics is a tough life and is even tougher on politicians’ families. I do not think it will come as a shock to any regular readers of my column to hear that I don’t agree with many of John Key’s political positions, but I do acknowledge the dedication he brought to the role. With at least three contenders slugging it out at the time of writing, the only thing that is certain is that by Monday evening we will have a new Prime Minister. While this is a massive change, the issues in this country won’t change at all. New Zealanders will still be facing a crisis in housing, and a health system with $1.7 billion stripped out of it that is failing many and particularly our elderly. Parents are increasingly being asked to dig into their already stretched pockets to prop up a public education system that is woefully under-resourced. Add to that too many New Zealanders are unable to find decent work, and crime rates are rising. And of course here in Canterbury, thousands of people are still waiting more than six years on to put their lives back together and finally have their earthquake repairs carried out. This is a Government that has focused on the short term. They are more concerned about the immediate news cycle and have failed to put together a plan for the future. Labour has taken the opposite approach – we have put together a plan to build houses, fund health and education, put more police on the beat and finally fix Cantabrians’ homes. We are ready to govern. We are ready to win in 2017. We proved that last Saturday with a colossal win in the Mt Roskill by-election.
