Course to boost survival
chances in an earthquake

A FREE course to help
people respond mentally
and physically after an
earthquake is being
offered in Christchurch.
Ben Logan and Dr Greg
Emerson, who run wilderness
survival courses
through their Wanaka
company New Age Primal
will take three, two-hour
sessions on Saturday.
The free course, which
will run at Bottle Lake
Forest, will cover emergency
first aid, mental
and physical resilience
training, survival mindset
strategies, developing an
earthquake action plan
and situational awareness.
Mr Logan said they
decided to run the free
course to help Cantabrians
following the 7.8 magnitude
earthquake that hit
Kaikoura and North Canterbury
on November 14.
He said there were still
some spaces available,
however, there would be a
maximum of 50 people in
each session.
He was not impacted

however, he knew people
who were.
“I wasn’t directly impacted,
but I’ve got a lot of
friends who were deeply.”
He said originally, they
had planned on doing one
free course, but there was so
much interest, they decided
to do three shorter ones.
Both he and Dr Emerson
run survival courses near
Wanaka, and have trained
emergency services personnel
and the Australian
Special Air Service.
But a lot of what they do
relates to an earthquake
situation, he said.
Mr Logan said the whole
idea of the free course was
to make sure people know
what do in a earthquake,
and how to react.
They will also be taking
donations on the
day, to go towards New
Zealand Women’s Refuge’s
Christchurch offices.
