Selwyn Times: November 29, 2016

8 Tuesday November 29 2016 SELWYN TIMES News Chance meeting leads to New York show • By Annabelle Dick ATTENDING a cousin’s birthday party as a 14-year-old led Southbridge’s Jayde Vivian to an invitation to take part in one of the world’s most coveted fashion events. Jayde, now 16, has been handpicked to walk in several New York Fashion Week shows in February. She’s only been modelling for two years and never considered it until a chance encounter at the party. “THere was a girl from NZ Models & Talent at my cousin’s birthday and she came up to me and we got talking and she said I should model. She gave me the director’s card and it just kicked off from there,” she said. Now the Ellesmere College student will walk for the world’s leading and emerging designers like Vera Wang, alongside exclusive models such as Gigi Hadid. She’s one of two local models to be picked. Selwyn Times reported earlier this month that Lincoln’s Jaime Spencer, 20, will also walk in NYFW. THe pair are two of three New Zealand models who were chosen for the opportunity through the Ozlink Fashion Programme. Said Jayde: “I can’t really believe it, it will only feel real once I’m in New York. I feel so privileged.” THe pair will spend 10 days in New York taking part in the major international Amit Singh Chahaun show, two boutique shows and two realway shows. THey’ll also get a city and studio photo shoot with a professional fashion photographer. “Going from little old Southbridge to New York is insane. If I got scouted it would be incredible,” she said. THis will be the first time she’s travelled further than Australia, and she says her parents aren’t too worried to let her travel abroad in spite of her age. “THey’re really excited for me, they’ve been so supportive,” Jayde said. While preparing for the New York events, the year 12 student is also just trying to get through schooling and finish her exams. “It’s been a wee bit tough but you’ve just got to prioritise,” she said. Jayde plans on studying business after leaving school. However, the pair both need to raise funds before committing to the trip. THe girls will be in New York from February 9 to February 22. •Help Jayde and Jaime make it to fashion week by donating through their Givealittle pages givealittle.co.nz/cause/ jaydeviviannyfw, and givealittle. co.nz/cause/getjaimetonyc NEW ZEALAND TO NEW YORK: Lincoln’s Jaime Spencer (left) and Southbridge’s Jayde Vivian will walk in one of the most prestigious fashion weeks in the world. Christmas gifts and decorations available now Florist | Fresh & Silk Flowers | Wall Art | Clocks | Gifts | Vases | Lamps | Home Furnishing | Jewellery Celebrate with us the Terrace Downs way! SELWYN TIMES Tuesday November 29 2016 9 PICTURESQUE: This historic mansion in Darfield (above), and a Prebbleton home (right), were among 100 houses from around the country entered in the final of the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. However, neither came away with a prize when results were announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on Saturday. The Darfield mansion, renovated by Craig Brown Construction Ltd, was entered in the Renovations Over $500,000 category and has previously won one of two supreme awards in the Canterbury regional final for House of the Year in July. The Prebbleton home, built by DNA Structures Ltd, was entered in the New Home $650,000-$1 million category. Police crack down on drink drivers POLICE SAY they will be carrying out more random patrols on all Selwyn roads over the Christmas and New Year holiday period – and the booze bus will be deployed in both rural and urban areas. They have partnered with the district council and licensed premises across the district in a Christmas-New Year drink drive campaign, saying motorists should be prepared for checkpoints and patrols anywhere, any time. The campaign encourages drivers to plan a safe ride home if they’ve had a few drinks this holiday season. While many people believed drivers who had been drinking had a lower chance of being stopped when they drove on rural back roads, this was not the case. “Police will be active in Selwyn operating check points and policing the roads in an effort to ensure that everyone is safe,” Senior Sergeant Pete Stills said. “Police encourage motorists to plan to have a sober driver and, if utilising licensed premises in Selwyn, to make use of the courtesy vehicles available.” Principal Sponsor T; tt’s Friends The Perfect Gift d him in hospital nd supported him ugh recuperation.
