Chance meeting leads to New York show<br />

ATTENDING a cousin’s birthday<br />
party as a 14-year-old led<br />
Southbridge’s Jayde Vivian to an<br />
invitation to take part in one of the<br />
world’s most coveted fashion events.<br />
Jayde, now 16, has been handpicked<br />
to walk in several New York<br />
Fashion Week shows in February.<br />
She’s only been modelling for two<br />
years and never considered it until a<br />
chance encounter at the party.<br />
“THere was a girl from NZ Models<br />
& Talent at my cousin’s birthday and<br />
she came up to me and we got talking<br />
and she said I should model. She<br />
gave me the director’s card and it just<br />
kicked off from there,” she said.<br />
Now the Ellesmere College student<br />
will walk for the world’s leading and<br />
emerging designers like Vera Wang,<br />
alongside exclusive models such as<br />
Gigi Hadid.<br />
She’s one of two local models to<br />
be picked. <strong>Selwyn</strong> <strong>Times</strong> reported<br />
earlier this month that Lincoln’s Jaime<br />
Spencer, 20, will also walk in NYFW.<br />
THe pair are two of three New<br />
Zealand models who were chosen for<br />
the opportunity through the Ozlink<br />
Fashion Programme.<br />
Said Jayde: “I can’t really believe it,<br />
it will only feel real once I’m in New<br />
York. I feel so privileged.”<br />
THe pair will spend 10 days in<br />
New York taking part in the major<br />
international Amit Singh Chahaun<br />
show, two boutique shows and two<br />
realway shows.<br />
THey’ll also get a city and studio<br />
photo shoot with a professional<br />
fashion photographer.<br />
“Going from little old Southbridge<br />
to New York is insane. If I got scouted<br />
it would be incredible,” she said.<br />
THis will be the first time she’s<br />
travelled further than Australia, and<br />
she says her parents aren’t too worried<br />
to let her travel abroad in spite of her<br />
age.<br />
“THey’re really excited for me,<br />
they’ve been so supportive,” Jayde<br />
said.<br />
While preparing for the New York<br />
events, the year 12 student is also just<br />
trying to get through schooling and<br />
finish her exams.<br />
“It’s been a wee bit tough but you’ve<br />
just got to prioritise,” she said.<br />
Jayde plans on studying business<br />
after leaving school.<br />
However, the pair both need to raise<br />
funds before committing to the trip.<br />
THe girls will be in New York from<br />
February 9 to February 22.<br />
