4 Tuesday January 17 2017 News Disruption at intersection near airport MAJOR roadworks will be carried out on the Russley Rd/Memorial Ave temporary roundabout this month, as work on the $112 million Russley Rd upgrade continues. Lane closures and other traffic management will be in place from 7pm Friday until 6am Monday to allow contractors to reconstruct the road through the intersection. The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists to expect delays and allow an extra 20min travel time. “Traffic will be closely monitored to try to reduce delays, however, people should plan ahead and allow extra travel time, especially if they are heading to Christchurch International Airport,” acting Transport Agency highway manager Colin MacKay said. “Motorists are reminded to keep to the speed limit and drive with extra care and attention while these changes are in place.” The planned works are weather dependent and may be postponed until the following weekend if necessary. SELWYN TIMES Tuesday January 17 2017 5 Half of eligible young voters enrolled • By Tom Doudney OLDER RESIDENTS could have a disproportionate say in deciding who represents Selwyn in Parliament after this year’s election, if current voter enrolment is anything to go by. Of eligible Selwyn electorate residents aged between 18 and 24, 62.71 per cent are enrolled as voters. Latest Electoral Commission statistics show 4145 of the estimated 6610 eligible Selwyn residents in the age group are enrolled. That compares to 65.51 per cent of 18 to 24-yearolds nationwide. The age group with the highest percentage of enrolled voters in Selwyn is the 65 - 69 group, with 2562 out of about 2660, 97.27 per cent. The nationwide figure is 97.25 per cent. Overall, 47,640 of about 53,040 eligible Selwyn residents, 89.82 per cent, are registered to vote. That compares to a nationwide percentage of 89.52 per cent. From the age of 35 up, all age groups have eligible voter enrolment of greater than 90 per cent. MAKING IT COUNT: Just over 62 per cent of eligible Selwyn electorate residents aged 18-24 are enrolled to vote. Percentages are higher in the older age groups. Jamie Kay, which makes baby blankets and clothes, will be featured at the Life Instyle show at the Royal Hall of Industries in Sydney, February 16 - 19. The business began in 2013, when Springston mother Jamie Fridds was searching for a suitable cot blanket for her second son and couldn’t find one. She began designing pieces in her studio, and soon expanded from cot blankets to linen and organic cotton baby clothing. Now the brand is stocked internationally. Road closed SPARKS RD has been closed between Sutherlands and Hendersons Rds due to the installation of the South-east Halswell Wastewater Scheme. The road is expected to be closed until January 29 to allow for the construction of a pump station at 270 Sparks Rd. A detour will be via Hendersons and Halswell Rds or via Cashmere Rd.
