The project is the work of locally owned and operated Gillman Wheelans, an established developer renowned for its successful subdivisions including popular Levi Park, also in Rolleston, developed in 2013. It’s great value and with the upgraded motorways under construction, the commute to various destinations is becoming much faster, and will continue to improve further.” Situated off Lincoln Rolleston Road, the existing Branthwaite Drive low density area will become the central arc of Falcon’s Landing, allowing a panoramic drive streaming off to family friendly cul-de-sacs and quiet comforting streets. Reserves located throughout Falcon’s Landing will include existing established trees helping to blend the old with the new. Rolleston reaps benefits of planning for the future Rolleston is one of the fastest growing towns in New Zealand, largely due to its forward planning and additions in infrastructure, commercial and community projects. Until 1990 the town had only a few sealed streets and a population of just under 1000. Today it has mushroomed to 15,000. Conservative estimates suggest it will hit 19,000 within 10 years. The current expansion began in the 1990s and was significantly boosted by people relocating post earthquake. Today its economy is booming and families are flocking to the flourishing town. New secondary school, Rolleston College, opened its doors in February, initially to 223 Year 9 students only, and will add year levels as students move through. Six years ago, Rolleston had one primary school; now the Ministry of Education has added another three primaries, with a fifth, Lemonwood Grove, opened at the start of this year. Rolleston is home to two South Island inland ports. Carter Group is developing I Port, a $500 million industrial and logistics park on 122 hectares. Stage 1 of the development saw the sale of 27 hectares to Lyttelton Port of Christchurch to develop an inland port. Next door at Izone is Port of Tauranga’s inland port covering 15 hectares. These two expansive industrial subdivisions have positioned Rolleston as a significant regional hub for exporting, importing, logistics, industrial and agricultural businesses. Meanwhile, large format retailers such as The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery and Noel Leeming are establishing, providing employment opportunities within the community. On the recreational and cultural arena, the new district library and community facility are designed to host a variety of events and activities, putting emphasis on learning, technology and community. Foster Park is Rolleston’s largest reserve with 11 sports fields, shared walking and cycling paths and are planning for a large children’s playground and indoor sports complex. This area has become a central hub for weekend sport and families within the community. Nearby is the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, which was completed only a few years ago and is already in line for an expansion to suit the growing population. Portrayal earns Darfield HS award • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE OFTEN tragic aftermath of drink-driving has been portrayed in a performance at the 2017 Stage Challenge & J Rock. Darfield High School was awarded second place in the RAW division, it also received five other awards. THe competition was held at Horncastle Arena recently. Darfield High School’s performance was titled Could You Live With It? Year 13 student and head of stage challenge Jade Collier said it was about showing what it is like when a driver is responsible for taking other people’s lives and what the driver has to live with. The idea was inspired from discussions in the media about drivers carrying passengers on a restricted licence. “We still can’t get over that we got second place as there was so many amazing performances on the night, we are so proud of everyone’s efforts,” Jade said. Lincoln High School also won six awards for its performance Hidden Poverty to raise awareness of the level of poverty, prevalent in society today. “After exploring other issues, TALENT: Darfield High School won six awards for their performance on the impact of drink driving. student leaders kept coming back to the idea poverty is becoming an increasingly big problem in the city,” the school’s dance and drama teacher Robyn Wylie said. Year 11 student leader Jessica McMillan said she was thrilled, the cast gave it everything and received so many awards. Rolleston College, who entered for the first time this year with only year 9 students, won two awards for their performance on the different types of stereotypes students are often put into at high school. Learning leader of the arts Merrin Diack said her students were outstanding and it was a big experience for the students doing the show for the first time. “It really encapsulated their idea of just being yourself and not being tied down by what anyone says you should be,” she said.
