A Chevrolet<br />
experience<br />
It was the sporty stylish look of the 1961 Chevrolet<br />
Impala coupe that first attracted Anneliese to her car.<br />
She was just twenty at the time.<br />
“My father always had old American cars<br />
so it wasn’t a surprise that I shared the same<br />
passion,” explains Anneliese.<br />
“We spent a lot of time looking for a car,<br />
searching and considering options on eBay<br />
then I saw the 61. It was in the days of dial<br />
up Internet so bidding was slow and it took<br />
some time to work out whether I’d won the<br />
auction or not.”<br />
Some years later, Anneliese still owns and<br />
loves her car though it has been changed<br />
over the years, with her Chevrolet Impala<br />
coupe looking quite different from when it<br />
first arrived in New Zealand.<br />
“It’s been an on-going journey of<br />
restoration,” explains Anneliese.<br />
Over the years, the car has been totally<br />
rebuilt. The engine was rebuilt recently<br />
and in 2015 the interior stripped and<br />
refurbished; taken back to the original<br />
factory specification. This included restoring<br />
the window mechanisms, and replacing all<br />
interior hardware and upholstery.<br />
The 1961 Chevrolet Impala coupe has a<br />
348 cu in, Tri-Power, big block V8 engine<br />
which was rebuilt by Rod Allen from New<br />
Plymouth. The 348 cu in, 280hp was a<br />
factory option in 1961.<br />
In January this year, Anneliese took the<br />
car to Muscle Car Madness in Rangiora<br />
where it was judged one of the Top Ten<br />
Cars. The event was a family affair with<br />
husband, Mark and their daughters also<br />
enjoying the weekend.<br />
When Anneliese and Mark got<br />
married, she drove the bridesmaids<br />
to the church in her coupe then Mark<br />
took over the wheel to drive them<br />
to the reception at Mapua wharf in<br />
Nelson.<br />
Anneliese’s Chevrolet has featured<br />
in the New Zealand Hot Rod magazine<br />
and made the journey to the Beach<br />
Hop in Whangamata several times.<br />
The family enjoys attending car events<br />
and Anneliese gets into the spirit,<br />
dressing in 1960s vintage pin-up<br />
fashion. They all enjoy getting out for<br />
a day in Ms Dxie, as the car is fondly<br />
called.<br />
“The 61 rides differently to a<br />
modern car, which we find enjoyable<br />
to drive and I love the nostalgia it offers,”<br />
adds Anneliese.<br />
The 61 Chevrolet was judged a Top Ten<br />
Car at Muscle Car Madness this year.<br />
